🚨 Search & Rescue Response – Bighorn Mountains

On Saturday, July 31, members of Sheridan Area Search & Rescue responded to an ATV accident in the Bighorn Mountains. Through the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies, the injured individual was located, treated, and safely evacuated from the backcountry.

We are incredibly grateful for the outstanding teamwork and professionalism of our response partners, including First Flight of Wyoming, Wyoming Regional EMS, U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement, Sheridan County Dispatch, and Bighorn County Dispatch. Your dedication, communication, and commitment to serving our communities made a difference and helped ensure a successful outcome.

Calls like these are a reminder that no single agency accomplishes these missions alone. Successful rescues depend on strong partnerships, seamless coordination, and the willingness of dedicated professionals to answer the call—day or night.

If you’re heading into the Bighorn Mountains, please ride responsibly, wear appropriate protective gear, let someone know your plans, and be prepared for changing conditions.

Thank you to everyone who played a role in this mission and for your continued commitment to keeping our communities and visitors safe.

16 HOURS left to support our mission and potentially double/triple your donation!

Sheridan Area Search and Rescue (SASAR) was incorporated into a 501c3 non-profit in 1994 and for 32 years we have provided an all volunteer trained and equipped search and rescue team that responds to emergencies in Sheridan County and surrounding areas at the behest of the Sheridan County Sheriff’s office. Over the years our highly trained and capable team has responded to a variety missions that have benefitted the residents of Sheridan County including lost subjects, injured subjects, stranded persons, and evidence searches. Additionally, we provide human-power, equipment, basic first aid, and rescue services to several county-wide events and we host a variety of training sessions on safety in the wilds and other related topics to Sheridan County youth groups and the general public. As Sheridan Area Search and Rescue expands we are out-growing our current base of operations. We intend to start saving for a new base of operations.

We sure do enjoy our community! We had a great time at the Sheridan WYO Rodeo parade!

We want to remind our community that the best day to donate to our mission is July 15th (next Tuesday) and to donate early during the WyoGives giving day!

A donation to us made that day has the opportunity to be doubled or more, every dollar is a dollar well spent to ensure our training, equipment, and availability remain top level for any pickle you might find yourself in. Sheridan County we have your back!

Numbers don’t lie, this organization puts in the hours and last year we worked on 16 different incidents (locally and aiding neighboring counties).

We are on track for even more incidents this year as we sit at 9 incidents through June.

People always ask if they don’t have time to commit, what can they do? Well July 15th is the best way to help us fiscally, if you give early during Wyo Gives your donation of any amount has the chance to be matched potentially more than once!

Please share our page with others, send us your email so we can provide you updates, and continue following along here as we help you navigate supporting us on July 15th during Wyo Gives.

Life-saving courage in the mountains.

A Wyoming Army National Guard MEDEVAC crew was recently recognized for a nighttime mountain rescue that saved the lives of two civilians after a fatal aircraft crash near Sheridan.

On Sept. 1, 2025, while on wildfire standby in Pinedale, the crew launched into high-altitude terrain, heavy smoke, and fading light. With no safe landing zone, they executed a precision hoist rescue through dense timber—overcoming entanglement in treetops to bring survivors safely aboard.

👏 Recognized for their actions:
Maj. Lauren Gurney
CW2 John Mathews
SFC Andrew McCown
SSG Ashley Ott
(Golf Co., 2-211 GSAB)

This is what readiness, teamwork, and service look like when Wyoming needs it most.
