In applying for Boys/Girls State we (student and parent/guardian) understand that Arkansas Boys/Girls State is a week long in residence program conducted by the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary, Department of Arkansas. Boys State is conducted on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas (UCA), Conway, and Girls State will be at Harding University, Searcy, both beginning May 24, 2026 and ending May 28, 2026. The student must be available to attend the full course remaining on campus or he/she should not apply. The tuition, which includes room and meals of $250 for Boys State and $300 for Girls State, is usually paid by the local Sheridan American Legion Post 30 using Legion/Auxiliary funds and donated funds from local businesses and individuals.
If your student completes the registration process AND Post 30 pays their tuition AND they fail to cancel their attendance before May 24 OR they "no show" or drop out early on May 24 or later for reasons other than beyond their control (such as injuries or illness) YOU agree to refund the tuition ($250 or $300) to Post 30 IF Post 30 is unable to recover their tuition. If between the tuition payment due date (below) and May 24 your student decides not to attend for any reason contact the Post Commander at 501-413-9502 and notify him so that we can recover the tuition before he/she becomes a "no show" on May 24.
Because tuition funds are limited, if more students apply and complete the registration process than there are funds available American Legion Post 30 will fund as many students as they have funds available. Post 30 has committed to sponsorship of 20 students total. They will accept "alternates" should funds become available. While we don't expect this to happen, should funds be exhausted before your student is referred/selected and completes the registration process we will fund those students who submit this completed form, to be dated by your counselor, based on the counselor's date of receipt. Early application and registration is recommended.
Key deadlines are: Registration for BOYS STATE begins February 9, 2025, the school must submit their student delegates NLT April 3 and the student must complete the on-line registration NLT April 10, with tuition payments due by May 1. Registration for GIRLS STATE begins March 3, the school must submit their student delegates by March 27 and the student must complete the on-line registration NLT April 10, with tuition payments due NLT May 1.
Finally, if your student's tuition cannot be funded by American Legion Post 30 would you be financially able and willing to pay his/her tuition in order for him/her to attend?

Yes ____ No ____ Partially, up to $__________

Student Signature: _______________________________ Date: _____________

Parent/Guardian Signature: _____________________________ Date: ____________

Date the School Counselor received this Completed form: _________________________

NOTE regarding student's Email: Each applicant must have a valid individual email address. This is not the school's email address. The parent/guardian must also have a separate email address. If you do not have an email address you can obtain a free one via Gmail.

Grant County VSO Vacancy

How to Become a VSO

To become a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) in Arkansas, you need to be an honorably discharged veteran, pass a background check, and complete specialized training and certification exams, often via the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA).

Here is a breakdown of the process and requirements to become a VSO in Arkansas:

1. Basic Qualifications

Veteran Status: Generally required to be an honorably discharged veteran.

Experience: Often requires 3+ years in veterans affairs, case management, or public service. Experience in case management or veterans affairs is highly preferred. Knowledge of VA regulations is preferred.

Skills: Strong communication skills, and empathy.

2. Training and Accreditation (Crucial Steps)

To legally represent veterans, you must become accredited:

Initial Training: Complete training, such as that conducted by the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) or the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO).
Exam: Pass a VSO skills exam with a required score (e.g., 75% or greater for state-specific roles).
Background Check: Must pass a thorough background investigation.
VA Recognition: Your accreditation must be recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of General Counsel.

3. Continued Education

Once hired and accredited, VSOs must complete yearly continuing education units to stay updated on regulations.

Summary of qualifications for Grant County VSO applicants:

The Grant County Judge has asked American Legion Post 30, Sheridan, to recruit a VSO.

As for Basic Qualifications (Above), we do not expect a candidate will meet all of these qualifications. Some similar job experience can be substituted. Applicants applying using "similar job experience" need to prepare a resume describing that job experience.

Training and certification is required. The Commander, Post 30 and Executive Board will interview prospective applicants. They will recommend the most qualified person to the County Judge. The County Judge will notify the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) Service Officer Division Director who is responsible for all Arkansas VSOs. The ADVA will coordinate the VSO training with you. If you complete training and pass any applicable exams you will become certified. Then the ADVA will notify the County Judge and you will be hired.

Job Duties: The primary function of a VSO is to assist veterans who are usually wanting to apply for disability benefits based on conditions resulting from injuries while on active duty. Sometimes they may be seeking information on filing an appeal of their denial or the percentage of disability approved by the VA.

Additional Information: The Grant County VSO position is a part time job. At present the pay is approximately $2700 a year paid through/by the Grant County Judge as Non Employee Compensation (IRS Form 1099-NEC).

Recent History: The Grant County VSO was granted office space in the building occupied by American Legion Post 30 in Sheridan. The case load in Grant County is relatively light compared to more populated counties. The departed VSO set his office hours on Mondays of each month. As the "open door no show" rate was relatively high, the VSO then set up interviews by appointment. At Post 30 you would have access to the building (the Post has no full time staff) and to a telephone and copier.

INTERESTED CANDIDATES should email [email protected] with your name and a call back number and desired hours of a call back or send a text to 501-413-9502 with your call back information. I am Charles Martin, Post 30 Commander, who along with the Post Executive Board, will be screening VSO applicants.

I received an email update on November 3 related to registration and parade route for the Pine Bluff Regional Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 15.

This is an update to a post I placed here on October 27. People were having problems registering via the QR code so here is another link you can copy/paste that brings up the registration page. Another option is to open and print and fill out the JPG file Registration Form in a separate post above this one and mail it in.

You may register for the parade using the QR code on the flyer or online at the link below:

The parade route has been shortened somewhat to begin not at the courthouse but at Main and 5th Street going south. Only parade vehicles can drive down Main Street once parade assembly begins.

Participants should arrive on the parade route NLT 9am on November 15. Positioning is "first come, first serve". If you are part of a group and you arrive at different times it may be difficult for you to all get back together as a group. Some parking lots near Main and 5th Streets will be marked for those who need a parking space (parade walkers, etc.).

Those attending but not actually in the parade can park on the large lot on the east side of the Convention Center. Non-participants will have seating provided on the north (8th Avenue) side of the Convention Center. The most direct route to the Convention Center from Sheridan will be I-530 to Martha Mitchell Expressway, right onto Convention Center Drive (formerly S Texas St) to East 8th Ave, and left on 8th to the parking lot.
