Midnight on the prairie.

A cowboy named Cade lay tied at the end of a rope, dragged behind a galloping horse across rocks and cactus, straight toward the edge of a ravine. The men who did it worked for Marsh, the loan shark who owned half the valley. Cade had robbed his money wagon. His best friend had sold him out.

He was seconds from dead when a second rope flew out of the dark.

The man who threw it was a Tanako farmer, out looking for a lost mare. He cut Cade loose, threw him over his shoulder, and vanished into the night.

Now he's kicked open his own front door with a bloody stranger on his back.

Inside, his wife stands alone with a Wi******er aimed at the door. She's pregnant. And she knows exactly what her husband just brought home: not a man, but the rope that was around his neck.

What none of them know yet: this family owes Marsh $400.
And the bounty on Cade's head is exactly $400.

Out on the prairie, seven torches spread out, searching.

Then one of them turns.

And rides straight for the house.

The lantern goes out. In the moonlight, the farmer takes the r***e from his wife's hands.

"Let 'em come."

Sarah was seconds away from freedom.

Her release papers were in her hand.

The prison gate was right in front of her.

Then she saw Emily.

Emily was on her knees in the middle of the yard, surrounded by three inmates.

One held her down.

Their leader forced her to clean a dirty shoe.

Then she stepped hard on Emily’s hand.

Emily flinched in pain.

But she didn’t scream.

She didn’t fight.

She just kept cleaning.

“Keep scrubbing.”

Sarah slowed down.

She watched for a moment.

Then looked at the gate.

Freedom was only a few steps away.

So she kept walking.

But behind her, the gang leader spat on her shoe and shoved it close to Emily’s face.

“Make it shine.”

Sarah stopped.

She looked down at the release papers.

Her jaw tightened.

Then she shoved them into her pocket.

Turned around.

And walked straight back.

“Back off.”

Sarah knocked one inmate away and pulled Emily to her feet.

For one second, it looked like she had ended it.

She hadn’t.

The gang turned on Sarah immediately.

One grabbed her collar.

Two others pinned her arms.

Sarah fought back, but she couldn’t move.

Then one of the inmates heard water splashing nearby.

She turned.

Duke, the prison K9, was drinking from a metal bowl.

The woman stared at the bowl.

Then at Sarah.

And smiled.

She walked toward Duke.

Duke stopped drinking and watched her approach.

She bent down.

Picked up his bowl.

Turned around.

And started walking back.

That was when Sarah’s expression changed.

She knew exactly what was coming.

The gang leader grabbed Sarah by the hair and pulled her head back.

Another inmate locked both of her arms behind her.

The woman raised Duke’s wet bowl.

Sarah twisted her face away.

They forced her back.

The cold metal touched her lips.

Emily stood only a few feet away, helpless and close to tears.

Sarah could already have been outside.

Instead, she was trapped because she came back for Emily.

“Drink it. Then we’re square.”

Sarah clenched her jaw.

She refused.

The woman slowly tilted the bowl.

Water reached the edge.

And then—

Duke suddenly jumped to his feet and barked.

Loud.

Sharp.

Everyone froze.

The bowl was still pressed against Sarah’s mouth.

Duke stared straight at them.

And what happened next was something none of them expected.

Comment **“PART 2”** if you want to see what Duke does next.
