Rooted in Wyoming

Rooted in Wyoming Rooted in Wyoming develops school and community agriculture projects to improve access to locally grown food for Wyoming families.

Our programs promote agricultural and nutrition education and strengthen local food systems to build resilient communities. What We Know
School gardens are great outdoor classrooms for students. School gardens reinforce math, science, nutrition awareness and many other topics taught in the classroom. They provide students with a sense of ownership of their school and the greater community. School

gardens have been shown to help students become better environmental stewards and develop important skills such as patience, cooperation, teamwork, pride and volunteerism. We also know that children that are exposed to agriculture early on, are more likely to pursue some type of associated career. Who We Are
Rooted in Wyoming is working to become a 501(c)(3) non-profit and is led by an all-volunteer board of directors, consisting of community members and invested organizations. We are dedicated to building and nurturing school and community gardens, in Sheridan County and across our state. Our team will work to create gardens that provide intergenerational and educational recreation; healthy, locally grown foods for Sheridan County families; connections with our area history; and increased appreciation of our local natural environment. Rooted in Wyoming was formed as a result of an immediate and long-standing community desire to promote the better understanding of local foods, nutrition and sustainability in our community. Our Goal
The goal of Rooted in Wyoming, is to provide support for those that are interested in implementing local foods and gardening into their curriculum. This will be done by taking the administrative work out of the process by providing funding, volunteer recruitment, tools & resources, planning & organization and curriculum support.

Then & Now: Seed Starting Through the Years🌱

As we celebrate 10 years of Rooted in Wyoming, we're looking back at one of the many ways we've connected students to local food through our Garden to Cafeteria program.

The first photo takes us back to 2017, when a longstanding partnership between Rooted in Wyoming and the University of Wyoming Sheridan Research and Extension Center (ShREC) helped launch some of our earliest seed-starting experiences. UW Assistant Research Scientist Beth Fowers worked with students from Woodland Park Elementary as they started seedlings destined for school gardens throughout the community.

Today, we're still helping students across Sheridan County get their hands in the soil, learn where food comes from, and build connections to gardening and local food systems.

A special thank you to our school partners, educators, UW Extension, and student organizations who help make these hands-on learning opportunities possible year after year.

Bringing the Garden to the Classroom! 🌱

With construction underway at the Fifth Street Greenhouse, our final Garden to Cafeteria classes of the season looked a little different.

Instead of visiting the greenhouse, students got a hands-on learning experience right in their classrooms. From planting seeds to learning about nutrition, these young gardeners continue to grow their knowledge and curiosity about local food.

Thank you to our educators, students, and partners for another great season of Garden to Cafeteria learning!💚

Mini-Grant Spotlight: Western Variety Farm🌟

We’ve been proud to work alongside Western Variety Farm as they continue providing fresh, local produce for the Sheridan community.

Through Rooted in Wyoming’s Mini-Grant Program, Western Variety Farm was able to upgrade equipment for their salad washing station with a new salad spinner and stainless steel packaging table, helping improve efficiency and maintain the quality of their produce after harvest.

Since receiving the grant, they’ve grown over 1,000 pounds of produce for the community.

You can find Western Variety Farm produce at the farmers market, local food pantries, Good Health Market, their on-site farmstand, and Cross E Dairy & Freedom Foods, 106 S Main St.

We’re grateful for local producers like Western Variety Farm and the important role they play in strengthening Sheridan’s local food system!

For the past 10 years, Rooted in Wyoming has been growing community, local food, and opportunity across Wyoming, and now, we’re building toward what comes next.

This WyoGives, we’re raising $50,000 to help fund the new road and initial utilities at our future site. It’s a practical step, but an important one, making the space accessible and ready for the next chapter of Rooted’s impact.

Donate to Rooted in Wyoming this WyoGives on July 15 and help us build what’s next!

For the past 10 years, Rooted in Wyoming has grown from its first partner garden, Ram Harvest Garden, into a growing network of 18 partner gardens and projects across Wyoming.

Started in 2016 and completed in 2017, Ram Harvest Garden was Rooted in Wyoming’s very first project, built through determination, community support, and countless hours of hard work. From digging holes and moving dirt to building garden beds and teaching spaces, this project laid the foundation for what Rooted in Wyoming would continue to grow into over the next decade.

Today, Ram Harvest Garden continues to serve as an outdoor extension of the classroom at Big Horn Schools, creating opportunities for students to experience hands-on agricultural education and connect with local food.

What began as Rooted’s first garden has now grown into 18 partner gardens and projects across Wyoming, creating spaces for education, local food production, and community connection statewide.

And we’re still growing.

As Rooted in Wyoming celebrates 10 years, we’re also looking toward the future. This WyoGives, we’re raising support to help build a road at the future Bridges campus, creating safer access and helping lay the foundation for expanded programs, partnerships, and community impact for years to come.

We’re proud of how far these roots have grown over the last decade, and excited for what’s still ahead!

It was such a joy partnering with Lagniappe Center for this year’s Lagniappe Luncheon. Rooted in Wyoming helped plant grow bags created for the event, which were later delivered to Easterseals, Sheridan VA Medical Center, Green House Living, and Westview Care Center.

Thank you, Lagniappe, for the meaningful work you do for families and the Sheridan community. We’re grateful to have been part of such a special event! 💚🌱
