Did you know that some of Hawaiʻi’s most treasured leis are made from tiny seashells? 😍

Gathered along Niʻihau's shores, delicate shells known as kahelelani, momi, and lāiki are carefully sorted by size, color, and type. Artisans then prepare each shell and patiently sew it into beautiful, intricate patterns. 🐚✨

This remarkable Hawaiian art has been passed down through generations for centuries. Even Hawaiian royalty, including Queen Kapiʻolani and Queen Emma, wore these exquisite shell leis. 👑🌺

Larry Bertlemann, known and loved as Rubberman, has passed away at 71. His style and his mana were fearless; his spirit was unforgettable, and his influence helped shape modern surfing in ways the world will never forget.

For many in the islands, Larry was more than a surfer. He was part of Hawaii’s surf soul. A pioneer. An icon. A name that will always live on in the lineup and in the hearts of those who love the ocean.

Rest in aloha, Larry Bertlemann.

💥Lua: The Ancient Fighting Art of Hawaiian Warriors 🔥✨

⚔️ Lua, also known as Kuʻialua, was a traditional Hawaiian combat system connected to the warrior culture of old Hawaiʻi.

🌺It was more than simple hand-to-hand fighting. Practitioners trained in grappling, strikes, joint control, sweeps, and techniques intended for real combat. ✨Weapons were also an important part of training, including spears, clubs, daggers, slings, and the distinctive leiomano fitted with shark teeth.

Warrior preparation could begin at a young age through wrestling, boxing, running and spear throwing.🌟Skilled Lua practitioners and teachers were known as ʻōlohe, and the art was closely associated with trained warriors, aliʻi, and those who protected them.

🔥Although much of the old knowledge became difficult to preserve after the Hawaiian Kingdom era, Lua survived through teachers and family lineages and later became part of the wider Hawaiian cultural revival.

🌺 Today, Lua represents more than fighting. It offers a glimpse into how Native Hawaiian warriors trained, prepared, and passed their knowledge down through generations.
