Shelton Community Cinema

Shelton Community Cinema Shelton Community Cinema's page will let you know what's being shown at both our monthly movie series -- Second Sunday Movies and Final Friday Movies!

Shelton Community Cinema screens two movies each month: on the second Sunday and the last Friday. Second Sunday movies focus on spirituality or inspirational topics, and are positive and upbeat in nature. We named these movies "Spiritual Cinema" until recently, when we added a second monthly film series. Now, the films we show on the second Sunday are simply called Second Sunday Movies. The second

film series we show is on the last Friday of each month, and is called Final Friday Movies. These films tend toward more controversial or off-beat subjects. Examples include films about America's food supply, genetically modified crops (GMO's), environmental concerns, healthcare issues, questions about 9/11, crop circles, and conspiracy theories. Quite a broad range of topics -- some scary and some upsetting -- but all interesting! Shelton Community Cinema has a subscriber list of over 200 individuals. We usually show our films in the PUD No. 3 auditorium at 307 W. Cota St. in Shelton (the PUD is moving to new quarters on John's Prairie Road in the spring of 2012, and we expect to continue using their facilities, but more on this later).

SHELTON COMMUNITY CINEMA IS IN TRANSITION
So, what does that mean?

Two things:

1. We will not be screening any movies during the months of March and April. This is due to scheduled renovations at the Senior Center during those months. During construction, our screening room will not be available.

Also, there will be no 'Final Friday' movie this month (Feb. 26th).

2. After 11 years of once-a-month, then twice-a-month, movies as Shelton Community Cinema, I'm ready to take a mental "walk-about" and decide if, or how, I want to continue this project. One possibility is to join forces with Seattle's Meaningful Movies organization (now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit). Another possibility is to move away from the twice-a-month movies, and schedule a movie whenever I find one worth watching. Also, both of these possibilities may come together. I'll have to wait to see what the Meaningful Movies folks have to offer.

Please know that I continue to believe in the necessity of a strong alternative cinema here in southern Mason County. Independently produced documentaries are a vital counterbalance to mainstream media's messages. And I will continue to shine my light in this manner...but I do need a break right now.

So, thank you all for your attendance and support -- especially my regulars. I deeply appreciate you all, and I know that you who attended my screenings were merely keeping your appointments. You were meant to be there. As was I.

Stay tuned...the best is yet to come!

Peace,
Bob Bottman

THE MOVIE
There will be a movie this Sunday, but not here in Shelton. Let me explain.

Many of you probably know that Michael Moore was recently admitted to a New York City hospital ICU for a severe case of pneumonia. He was just released and is now home recuperating.

Michael is best known by many for his documentary films Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine, both of which highlight topics considered almost subversive by mainstream media. His latest film, Where to Invade Next, is being released to theaters across the country this week. However, as he is not yet strong enough to travel and work to promote the film, Michael has asked for our help.

I have decided the best way Shelton Community Cinema can support Michael right now is to promote Where to Invade Next ourselves. Here's what I'm asking you to do:

1. Go to Michael's website (http://michaelmoore.com/WhereToInvadeNextArmy/) to watch the film's trailer and to read more about Where to Invade Next and why he made the film.

2. Plan on joining us this Sunday, Feb. 14, for the 3:35 PM showing of Where to Invade Next at the Grand Theater in Tacoma (the nearest venue to Shelton). If you can't make that showing, please go to one that better fits your schedule -- it will be at the Grand for a week, from February 11th through the 18th.

3. Where to Invade Next has been critically reviewed as Michael Moore's best movie yet! To insure your ticket, click here to go to the Grand Theater's website (http://www.grandcinema.com) and purchase your tickets online before Sunday. Also, arrive early to make sure you get a good seat. :o)

Then tell your friends and family about the film, and encourage them to see it as well.

WE ENCOURAGE CARPOOLING
If you need a lift to Tacoma for Where to Invade Next, give me a call at 360-280-3035. Also, if you are going and have room in your car to give others a ride, give me a call and I'll put you on the ride-available list! Or simply make your own arrangements.

ONE LAST THING
Terri Shaw, the Director of the Mason County Senior Activities Center, has told me that they will be undertaking a major renovation project this spring, making our usual movie room unavailable for the months of March and April. I will let you know what other arrangements I can make for our 'Second Sunday' films for those months. Stay tuned!

Peace,
Bob Bottman

THE MOVIE
Our first film of the New Year is Kindness Is Contagious, which we'll show this Sunday.

Kindness Is Contagious is an inspiring documentary about the powerful viral effect of simple kindness. In the film, prominent scientists discuss the latest research into compassion, and ordinary people tell personal stories about the impact of kindness on their lives.

This film is narrated by Catherine Ryan Hyde, author of the bestselling novel Pay It Forward, which was also made into a movie!

Total running time for Kindness Is Contagious, plus the short feature preceding it, is about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

SHOWTIME AND LOCATION
Kindness Is Contagious will be shown starting at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 10th in the Mason County Senior Activities Center at the Pavilion, 190 W. Sentry Drive, just west of Shelton. To get to the Pavilion from Hwy 101, take the Matlock/City Center exit, turn left toward 'Matlock' then turn right onto Hulbert Road (about 1,000 ft. from the northbound Hwy 101 off-ramp, and about 300 ft. from the southbound off-ramp). Continue on Hulbert Road and follow it as it makes a 90 degree left turn at Gillis Auto Center. The Pavilion is about 1/4 mile from the auto center, straight ahead and slightly to your left. Here is a Google Maps view of the location.

You may park in the lot directly in front of the building and enter through the main doors. Our room is directly ahead of you down the hallway.

As before, we rely on your donations to pay the screening fee for our movies, with the remainder being split between SOCK (working with others to bring a YMCA to Shelton) and the Senior Center.

We hope to see you this Sunday at 2:00 PM…and please forward this email to anyone you feel would be interested!

See you at the movies!

AFTER THE MOVIE POTLUCK
Have you ever been inspired or energized by a movie, but then had no one to discuss it with? We've thought of that, and have scheduled a discussion time right after Sunday's film. It will be in the same room as our screening...AND since discussion always goes better with food, please bring some with you on Sunday. The Senior Center has agreed to let us use the "movie room" for this, but not the kitchen. So, finger-food or a dish that doesn't require cooking would be good.

Hope you can join us after the movie!

THE MOVIE
This Friday we are screening the award-winning documentary Genetic Roulette, which presents evidence pointing to genetically engineered food as a major contributor to rising disease rates in the US population, especially among children.

Gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, inflammatory diseases, and infertility are just some of the problems implicated in humans, pets, livestock, and lab animals that eat genetically modified soybeans and corn.

Also highlighted are Monsanto's strong-arm tactics, the FDA's fradulent policies, and how the USDA ignores a growing health emergency.

Genetic Roulette tells one of the most important stories of our time, and with the very recent approval by the FDA of genetically engineered salmon, soon to be in your grocer's seafood section, this film becomes even more relevant to those of us who rely on fish for at least a part of our diets. By the way, this GM salmon will not be labeled as genetically modified unless we can convince Congress NOT to pass HR 1599, which would block any federal or state requirement that genetically engineered food be labeled!

We will also show two very short films preceding our main feature, both focusing on heart-warming aspects of two recent tragic events -- the terrorist attacks in Paris, and the mass exodus of refugees from war-torn Syria.

Join us this Friday for an evening that may change the way you look at food; and also to see how love and compassion bring us together as one human family. Oh, and you also get popcorn!

SHOWTIME, LOCATION AND OTHER INFORMATION
Genetic Roulette will be shown at 7:00 PM, November 27th at the Little Skookum Community Hall, 3480 SE Lynch Road, Shelton.

Driving Instructions to the Little Skookum Community Hall:
From Shelton, take Hwy 101 south toward Olympia. Turn left onto Lynch Road at Taylor Village (you'll see Sundance RV & Auto Center on your left -- this is about 3 miles from where Hwy 3 joins Hwy 101 just south of Shelton). Once on Lynch Road, continue for 3.7 miles. The drive leading to the Little Skookum Community Hall will be on your right. There is a sign there as well: "Skookum Hall & Field".
From Olympia, take Hwy 101 toward Shelton. Turn right onto Lynch Road at Taylor Village, about a mile past the Little Creek Casino. Proceed 3.7 miles to Little Skookum Community Hall on your right.
For a Google Maps' view of where the Little Skookum Community Hall is located, click here.

As always, we rely on your donations to pay the screening fee for our movies, with the remainder being split between the rent for our movies' venue and SOCK (working with our community to help bring a YMCA to Shelton).

We hope to see you this Friday at 7:00 PM…and please forward this to anyone you feel would be interested!

THE MOVIE
Our 'Second Sunday' film for November consists of three presentations made by Dr. Wayne Dyer shortly before his passing on August 29, 2015.

Wayne Dyer was an internationally renowned author and motivational speaker. Screening these talks of his is our second tribute to this amazing man (last month we screened his only full-length movie The Shift).

Join us this Sunday as Wayne Dyer speaks with us about the divine Self residing in each of us; of the power of "I am"; and how we are all much more than we believe!

Total running time for Wayne Dyer's presentations, plus a short feature preceding it is about an hour .

SHOWTIME AND LOCATION

THE MOVIE
This Friday our feature film is Mayan Prophecies and Crop Circles. This is an amazing documentary that looks at the extraordinary connection between symbols found in the ancient Mayan calendar as well as 6,000 year old Sumerian texts, and crop circle formations that have appeared on farmlands in the English countryside.

Those who have studied these crop circles believe they make up a great symbolic message system, covering long stretches of historic time. Using advanced code breaking technology, researchers have been able to unlock a detailed set of messages that seem to prophesy about the future of our planet and humanity.

Join us this Friday evening as Mayan Prophecies and Crop Circles lays out a fascinating explanation of why crop circles are showing up now, and what their relationship is to the ancient symbology they depict.

We will also have a short film preceding our main feature that focuses on fluoride in our environment, and its effect on us.

SHOWTIME, LOCATION AND OTHER INFORMATION
Mayan Prophecies and Crop Circles will be shown at 7:00 PM, October 30th at the Little Skookum Community Hall, 3480 SE Lynch Road, Shelton.

THE MOVIE
Our 'Second Sunday' film for October is The Shift.

This was Wayne Dyer's first full-length film, made in 2009 when he was 68 years old. It is an engaging exploration of our mid-life longing for more purpose and meaning.

Through the interwoven stories of a businessman, a mother, and a film director, this inspiring film shows us how to find the path to our spiritual purpose -- and therefore our greatest joy.

Dr. Wayne Dyer was an internationally renowned author and motivational speaker. He passed away on August 29, 2015. Our screening of The Shift is our tribute to this amazing man, who helped many find the path to living a life of meaning rather than ambition. This journey, and the peace it can bring is what he called the "shift".

Join us this Sunday as we learn from Wayne Dyer how to find our dharma, or calling of the soul, and then how to live with it!

Total running time for The Shift and the short feature preceding it is about two hours.

SHOWTIME AND LOCATION
The Shift will be shown starting at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 11th in the Mason County Senior Activities Center at the Pavilion, 190 W. Sentry Drive, just west of Shelton. This Friday, we are trying out a new venue for our 'Final Friday' movies: the Little Skookum Community Hall! I've included information about this location after the description of our movie below.

THE MOVIE
This Friday our feature film is an explosive investigative documentary that explores the potential long-term health effects from cell phone radiation, including brain cancer and infertility.

Mobilize is a thought-provoking film that examines the most recent scientific research on cell phone radiation, and the harsh challenges politicians face trying to pass precautionary legislation.

Featuring interviews with expert researchers, mobile phone industry representatives, and prominent politicians, Mobilize illuminates how industry's economic and political influence can corrupt public health.

Join us this Friday evening as Mobilize highlights the very real health problems posed by our ever increasing reliance on cell phones in our daily lives.

SHOWTIME, LOCATION AND OTHER INFORMATION
Mobilize will be shown starting at 7:00 PM on Friday, September 25th at the LITTLE SKOOKUM COMMUNITY HALL, 3480 SE Lynch Road, Shelton.

Why the Little Skookum Community Hall?
First of all, Alpine Way (where we've been screening our 'Final Friday' films for some time now) was never intended to be a permanent home for us, althought the staff there have been very accommodating in letting us use their meeting room. With that in mind, we've been on the lookout for other venues for our 'Final Friday' films. One of our regulars, who lives near the Little Skookum Community Hall suggested I look into using it. So I contacted those responsible for the use of the Hall, and they agreed to let us try it out.

This Friday's movie is a test run to see how the Hall works for us, and for the Hall's leadership to see how Shelton Community Cinema might fit in with other activities there.

What about our 'Second Sunday' movies?
We will continue to screen our 'Second Sunday' movies at the Mason County Senior Activities Center.

As always, we rely on your donations to pay the screening fee for our movies, with the remainder being split between the rent for our movies' venue and SOCK (working with our community to help bring a YMCA to Shelton).

We hope to see you this Friday at 7:00 PM…and please forward this email to anyone you feel would be interested!

WE'RE BACK!
After a hot, dry, and very busy summer, we are geared up and excited to begin our fall and winter movie season!

THE MOVIE
Our first movie this fall is our 'Second Sunday' film for September: The Economics of Happiness.

This documentary reveals how globalization is accelerating climate change, destroying jobs, fraying the fabric of our communities, and adding to the stress of modern life.

But most importantly, The Economics of Happiness shows that these trends can be reversed! With stunning footage and thought-provoking commentary from thinkers and activists on every continent, the film demonstrates that a better world is not only possible, it's within our reach.

Join us this Sunday as we learn how small, local economies around the world are preserving traditions, cultures, and communities; and ultimately safeguarding our happiness!

Total running time for The Economics of Happiness and the short feature preceding it is about an hour-and-a-half.

SHOWTIME AND LOCATION
The Economics of Happiness will be shown starting at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 13th in the Mason County Senior Activities Center at the Pavilion, 190 W. We hope to see you this Sunday at 2:00 PM…and please forward this email to anyone you feel would be interested!

See you at the movies!

SUNDAY AT SUE'S
We will have a Sunday at Sue's right after the movie! The Senior Center has agreed to let us use our "movie room" for the pot luck and discussion. So, if you enjoy good food and great company, join us after the movie for our second Sunday at Sue's at the Senior Center! And remember to bring your favorite entrée, side-dish, or dessert with you.

Technical support for showing these films is provided by Bob Bottman, because he likes doing it. For more information about audio and video services, contact Bob at 360-432-3229, or email him at [email protected].

After a busy summer break, we're getting ready to start Shelton Community Cinema's fall season!

Our Second Sunday movie in September will be "The Economics of Happiness", a documentary about moving away from globalization to a more local and sustainable way of life. An excellent way to kick-off our fall line-up.

Our Final Friday movie in September will look at the long-term dangers of cell phone radiation. This is a real issue for children and teens who spend many hours a week using cell phones and other wireless devices.
