Well, last night we came to the end of an era..... as we watched "Debbie" be driven away by her new owner.....
I bought Debbie (named after my best friend for the last 38 years) in 2002 because I needed a van to drive the SOCK kids home - and on field trips - and to haul all the SOCK equipment - etc......
Debbie served me well - for 13 wonderful years - hauling HUNDREDS of SOCK kids from the youth center safely home at night - or out and about on our many field trips..... I remember so well having about 12 kids pile into her when SOCK closed and spending the next 1-1/2 hours driving from Timberlakes to the Skok dropping kids off at their homes.
I remember the heartbreak of dropping the little 8 year old at his little shack of a house - completely dark - knowing no one was at home for him.... and then pulling over on Hwy 101 to let the 19 year old out with his sleeping bag and backpack.... to watch him walk out into the field - to the homeless camp.... problems that made me cry myself to sleep at night, knowing I had no solution for them.
I remember fun times, also - the field trips - kids experiencing the ocean for the very first time - kids visiting Seattle for the very first time...
I remember when I acquired a headstone... (it's a long story!) and it was on the floor in the backseat while I tried to locate the "purchaser"... but in the meantime, the SOCK kids fought over who had to be the one to sit next to it! They played rock, paper, scissors and the loser was it!!! I laughed till I cried.
I remember when some of my CDs went missing out of Debbie after a trip taking a bunch of kids home - and how enraged all the SOCK kids got - that someone would jack something from "Sue".... made me feel pretty darn good to be loved that much!
I'm really happy that Debbie is going to a good home - a wonderful man with 4 children (recently separated) who only has a 2 seater pickup and can't have visitation with his children without a car that can hold them all.
He even loved my progressive/liberal bumper stickers on her rear end!
Debbie is going to be in 7th heaven hauling kids around again! That's what gave her incredible joy! Go in peace, my friend! You are needed elsewhere! Your friend, forever - Sue..
