A 110-million-year-old dinosaur has been found so remarkably preserved that it looks less like a fossil and more like a creature frozen in time. 🦖
Discovered accidentally by oil sands miners in Alberta, Canada, in 2011, the Borealopelta markmitchelli is an extraordinary “dinosaur mummy.” Its skin, armor, keratin sheaths, stomach contents, and even traces of its original coloration survived in three dimensions.
Scientists discovered that its final meal included ferns and charcoal, offering a glimpse into its last moments in a Cretaceous landscape. Even more astonishing, chemical analysis revealed a reddish-brown color with countershading camouflage.
Despite being an 18-foot-long, heavily armored herbivore weighing around 3,000 pounds, this ancient dinosaur still relied on camouflage to stay hidden from predators. 🦖🔥
