🛑From The W6SL Memorial Ham Radio Magazine Collection, this February 1957 QST opens with hardware that looks more like a machine shop problem than product.

📡 KA3DRR in the 2026 CQ WPX CW: Flow State, Smart Pacing, and Chasing the West Coast Leaderboard

This past weekend I jumped into the 2026 CQ WPX CW contest with a focused mission: push hard while protecting flow state - optimizing airtime with cognitive ergonomics instead of a full 48-hour burnout grind.

The online scoreboard captured a solid effort with clear rhythm:

Multiple strong rate hours hitting 70–97 QSOs, including several massive scoring spikes (some exceeding 114k points in a single hour).

Excellent early multiplier work (peaking at 48) and productive late-contest pickups.

Strategic resets (those low hours were planned breathers to maintain focus and neural efficiency).

To keep the competitive edge, I printed last year’s W6 SO High All leaderboard - where I finished 4th - and taped it to the operating desk. I tracked the top competitors in real time, marking their progress, spotting opportunities, and adjusting my band plan accordingly. This year’s goal: 2000 QSOs. The final numbers are still settling, but the process felt strong.

West Coast ops know the Pacific propagation hurdle intimately. Those big mid-contest peaks came from riding the best openings on 15m and 20m while staying disciplined across the bands. The bar charts show the pattern clearly: solid starts, explosive middle runs, intentional dips for recovery, and a determined finish.

This card smells like contest work.

Not flowers.

Not vacation.

Work.

A crowded shack. Radios stacked close. Computers glowing. Cables everywhere. The operator leaned into the controls. The callsign CT3BX burning red above the station.

Madeira was not scenery here.

Madeira was infrastructure.

The back of the card confirms the contact with W6SL on 24 July 1997 at 2222 UTC, on 14 MHz, using RTTY, with a 599 report. It lists HB9CRV as QSL manager and shows the station tied to Hernâni M. F. Correia in Funchal, Madeira.

That matters.

🛑RTTY contesting was never soft radio. It demanded timing, clean signals, solid decoding, disciplined logging, and station control under pressure. Before today’s waterfall comfort and software polish, digital contesting had more edges. You worked the machine, or the machine worked you.
