A Voice for Change. A Passion for Inclusion.

Meet Jessica, a passionate self-advocate who regularly writes to state legislators about disability-related issues. She serves as Sergeant at Arms on the Board of Self-Advocates of Indiana (SAI) and has dedicated 23 years as a consumer representative on the Indiana Human Rights Committee!

Her message to employers is powerful:

💬 "Individuals with disabilities deserve as much consideration as a non-disabled person when they are both qualified for the position."

She believes employees with disabilities can bring fresh perspectives and help businesses become more inclusive.

Now, she's working toward her own goal of paid employment, hoping to be a role model for her peers and continue creating positive change.

Her story is a reminder that inclusion isn't just about having a seat at the table. It's about having a voice, being heard, and being given an opportunity!

What does Steve love most about volunteering? "Getting new friends!"

Through Shares, Inc.'s Skills to Work program, Steve has been busy making a difference in our community! At the Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen, he helps prepare donated food items, break down boxes, take out trash, and clean tables. He's also lending a hand at the local animal shelter by helping with laundry! 🐾

But for Steve, volunteering is about more than completing tasks. It's about connecting with others, building friendships, and learning to communicate with new people. He says volunteering makes him happy, and he'd miss the friendships he's made if he couldn't participate.

🌟 His job coach describes him as "ambitious," and his Shares, Inc. direct support professional praises his ability to follow directions and his eagerness to get to know fellow volunteers.

What's next? Steve is working to find paid employment! Along the way, he's gaining valuable experience, developing workplace skills, and building his resume.

🌟 Every Opportunity Builds Possibilities! 🌟

Sometimes, all it takes is an opportunity to discover something new about yourself!

Stephanie has been part of Shares, Inc. since 1988, working in our workshop with little interest in pursuing community employment. But when the opportunity came along to fill in as our receptionist, she decided to give it a try! 💙

Since then, she's learned to transfer calls, become familiar with staff extensions, and strengthened her communication skills. She enjoys working more independently and having a quieter space where she can brainstorm ideas for a book she's writing! 📚 She also enjoys using her earnings to buy books, sharing that "Reading is more fun than television!"

Her supervisors have noticed increased confidence, a more positive outlook, and a greater willingness to try new things.

✨ The exciting next step? She has opened a Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) case to pursue employment as a receptionist at Shares, Inc.!

Her story reminds us that interests and goals can change when people are given opportunities to explore their abilities and discover new possibilities.

🌟 From Part-Time to Full-Time, Meet Connor! 🌟

When Connor started working at Thunderbird Molding in early 2026, he was hired as a part-time employee. But in less than six months, his hard work, determination, and dedication earned him a FULL-TIME POSITION! 👏🎉

Today, Connor takes parts from the assembly line, puts them together if needed, and boxes them for shipping. But to him, his job means so much more than a paycheck.

💬 “I enjoy being a part of the team.”

Connor takes pride in his accomplishments, values his coworkers, and appreciates having a purpose each day. One of his biggest motivations is being able to provide for himself and his little sister.

❤️ “I know my mom would want me to be happy and experience everything life has to offer.”

When asked what advice he would give someone with a disability who is looking for work, Connor encouraged them to consider working with a job coach. Having the opportunity to explore different careers helped him discover the right fit.

And Connor had one more piece of financial advice: “Open up a Roth IRA as soon as possible!” 😄

Connor's story is a wonderful reminder of what can happen when determination meets opportunity. A job isn't just about earning money. It's about independence, friendships, personal growth, and building a future.

Congratulations, Connor! We are proud of all you have accomplished and excited to see what comes next! 💙

For Parker, employment has meant growth, independence, and a lot more choices.

Parker was hired by Thunderbird Molding in January 2025, and today he runs several different presses and helps make everything from tumblers to protective cases for medical devices. He says his favorite part of work is the people he works with, and his paycheck helps him pay for groceries and enjoy things he loves, like biking and fishing.

But perhaps the biggest change? Parker says having a job has helped him become “a lot” more independent. He now lives on his own and has more choices in his life.

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity isn’t.

In 2025, just 38.1% of working-age people with disabilities were employed, compared with 74.8% of people without disabilities.

That gap represents people with skills, strengths, goals, and a desire to contribute who may simply need an employer willing to open the door.

Could your business be that opportunity?

Shares, Inc. can help connect employers with individuals ready to learn, work, and become part of your team.

Let’s put abilities to work. Reach out to Shares, Inc. to learn how your business can get involved!

According to the Job Accommodation Network (JAN), 66% of employers said workplace accommodations were very or extremely effective in helping employees with disabilities perform their jobs.

That might mean clearer instructions, a different schedule, assistive technology, or simply finding a better way to complete a task.

The question isn’t “Can this person do the job?”
Maybe it’s “What will help this person do their best work?”

Think workplace accommodations are expensive? Think again.

According to the Job Accommodation Network (JAN), 61% of workplace accommodations cost employers absolutely nothing. And when an accommodation does have a one-time cost, the median is just $300.

Sometimes helping a great employee succeed is as simple as a small change in schedule, communication, equipment, or how a task is completed.

Sometimes the best way to strengthen your workforce is to widen the door.

Accenture found that companies leading in disability inclusion were 25% more likely to outperform their industry peers in productivity, measured by revenue per employee.

Why? Inclusive hiring gives employers access to a broader pool of skills, perspectives, talents, and problem-solvers that might otherwise be overlooked.

This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, consider this: Are you looking at everything a candidate CAN bring to your team?

💡 What if creating more opportunities could also make your business stronger?

Research from Accenture found that companies leading in disability inclusion achieved 1.6x more revenue, 2.6x more net income, and 2x more economic profit than other companies participating in the Disability Equality Index.

That’s worth thinking about.

When employers recognize talent, remove barriers, and give people of all abilities the opportunity to contribute, everyone has the chance to benefit.

This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we’re challenging employers to look beyond disability and discover the ability, talent, and potential waiting to be put to work. 💼
