Use your voice to help shape healthy aging at Crossroads YMCA!

At the Crossroads YMCA, we believe our “Active Older Adults” community is a cornerstone of everything we do. That’s why we’ve launched the Crossroads Healthy Generations Study—an initiative dedicated to reimagining what healthy aging looks like for adults 50+. Whether it’s a moment of belonging, a sense of purpose you found in a class, or a connection made over coffee, your experiences will directly inform our new programs and space designs. 🩵

We invite you to share a story about your journey with the Y. It only takes a few minutes, and your voice will help us create a more meaningful experience for generations to come. Share your story at https://tinyurl.com/ShareMoreStories

💧 Water Safety Tip: Respect the water.

Barriers at home pools are the first step in preventing unintentional water entry- use self-closing and self-latching gates. Parent or adult constant supervision is the best way to prevent drowning in your backyard. Anyone can get into trouble regardless of swimming ability. Designate a water watcher anytime your pool is in use.

Recognize – recognize the signs of non-swimmers, tired swimmers, distressed swimmers and potentially unsafe situations
Education – learn what factors can lead to drowning
Supervision – direct, constant supervision is key
Physical barriers – provide fencing, safety covers, alarms and life jackets
Expectations – understand what to expect from the aquatic environment and the body’s response, know your limits.
Communicate – warn and inform, communicate the dangers that are present in, on and around the water
Training – learn to swim and how to respond to an emergency

Big thanks to the Association of Aquatic Professionals for keeping us safe and sharing their top water safety tips! Knowing how to swim isn’t just a skill, it’s a life-saving tool. At the Y, we’re proud to offer Swimming Pop-Ups and classes designed to introduce water safety tips and build confidence in and around the water. Be sure to be on the lookout for our Crossroads YMCA Aquatics Pop-Ups!

Water Safety Tip: Lake conditions can change quickly. Lifeguards, forecasts, and beach warning flags are your friends. Plan before swimming in Lake Michigan. Only swim at a beach with a lifeguard on duty and always swim with a buddy. Wear coast guard approved lifejackets on open water. Know your swimming ability- the lake is not a pool.

Swim status is communicated through a flag system at each beach.
🟢A green flag means there are no swimming restrictions; swimming is permitted
🟡 A yellow flag means that a swim advisory is in place; swimming is allowed but caution is advised.
🔴 A red flag means that a swim ban is in place; swimming is not allowed. Conditions do not meet safe swimming standards.

Swim bans and advisories may be implemented based on weather conditions such as lighting or high winds, surf conditions such as high waves, or water quality conditions. Please be aware of the current swimming status when you go to the beach and follow all the instructions from lifeguards. Swimming status may change throughout the day as water and weather conditions change.
