Something to try!

A single clearance-section rose bush from any garden center produces enough propagation material for 8 to 12 new plants. The technique is hardwood cutting propagation — the same method commercial nurseries use before marking up prices 400 percent.

WHAT YOU NEED:
One rose bush with healthy canes. Bypass pruners. Rooting hormone ($5). Potting mix. Small pots or a nursery flat.

STEP 1: Select canes the thickness of a pencil — roughly 1/4 inch diameter. Younger wood roots faster than old grey canes.

STEP 2: Cut 6 to 8 inch sections. Each cutting needs at least 3 nodes (the bumps where leaves emerged). Bottom cut at 45 degrees below a node. Top cut flat above a node.

STEP 3: Strip all leaves from the lower two-thirds. Dip the 45-degree end in rooting hormone powder. Tap off excess.

STEP 4: Insert cuttings into moist potting mix so two-thirds of the stem is buried. Only one or two nodes should be above soil.

STEP 5: Cover with a clear plastic bag or bottle to create a humidity chamber. Place in bright indirect light — not direct sun.

EXPECT: Roots develop in 4 to 8 weeks. New leaf growth confirms success. Transplant to individual pots once roots fill the container.

Total investment: $5 rose + $5 hormone = $10 for up to 12 plants worth $120 at retail.
