"Then He said to them all, '
If anyone desires to come after Me,
let him deny himself,
and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
For whoever desires to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.
For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world,
and is himself destroyed or lost?'"
- Luke 9:23-25 (NKJV)

Yesterday we had the privilege of hearing from Doctors Warren and Lindsey Cooper, medical missionaries who have been based at a certain hospital in northeastern DR Congo - where John's father worked for many years, and where John and all of his sisters were born! The doctors, with their young son Emmanuel, came to speak with us for a few hours at the airport here in Shelby. They were already in the U.S. for a planned trip when news of the new Ebola outbreak in Congo came out, and it looks like this is going to affect their plans to return to DRC next week.

From them we learned that medical personnel are struggling to catch up with an epidemic that went undetected for 2 months or more, as this strain of Ebola is not the one they've dealt with in the past. Two of the missionary doctors and their families were recently evacuated after the doctors suffered direct exposure to Ebola; Dr. Peter Stafford became very ill with the virus but is now making progress with recovery in a hospital in Germany. His family is so far free of illness. Dr. Patrick LaRochelle was taken to a hospital in Prague where he is being isolated and closely monitored; he has so far not come down with it.

I'd like to quote a written update from Dr. LaRochelle, who has been staying in contact with his colleagues in Congo:

"I can say that I have seen the commitment of the Congolese doctors leading the response. And I've seen the context in which they are working: an outbreak already out of control by the time it was recognized, a region in a constant state of conflict between multiple rebel groups since 2017, a province 1000 miles away from the capitol, and a health system under-resourced both in diagnostic and treatment capacity. The challenges are overwhelming, and it's easy for me to lose hope. But what gives me hope is my colleagues who are fighting for the lives of every patient, risking so much to follow their call to heal the sick, and then many hundreds and thousands - both Congolese and expatriate - who are mobilizing to come fight Ebola with them. We are encouraged by their lives and are honored to know them and serve alongside them. We are amazed to see them not flinch or draw back in the face of so much danger and chaos." (From an update published by Serge.org).

Serge also posted: "Dr. LaRochelle requests prayer on behalf of courageous Congolese medical workers and for the arrival of more protective equipment and treatments. He also asks for prayer that the transmission of this virus stops, and that a vaccine designed to treat this strain of the virus would be developed quickly. Serge requests prayer for Dr. LaRochelle and the Stafford family to remain healthy and for Dr. Peter Stafford's condition to improve daily."

While speaking to our Compass candidates who are preparing to serve overseas, Dr. Warren Cooper noted that many people in our society simply do not understand the desire to leave a comfortable, relatively safe life in American for a place that seems so dangerous. He pointed out that it is a privilege to be able to follow our Master. He said that as doctors, they get to do what Jesus spent most of His time on earth doing: preaching the gospel and healing the sick. He also emphasized that those ministries in Congo would not be possible if not for the missionary pilots and mechanics.

So please be praying for the situation in DRC. Pray that the Lord will be glorified as His people go in His name to preach the gospel, heal the sick, and provide the help and support needed to accomplish all of these things. And please pray for our candidates and staff as we work together to help them get ready to go!

"For I know that my Redeemer lives,
And He shall stand at last on the earth;
And after my skin is destroyed, this I know,
That in my flesh I shall see God,
Whom I shall see for myself,
And my eyes shall behold, and not another.
How my heart yearns within me!"
-- Job 19:25-27 (NKJV)

This month has been a month of milestones! Here are just a few:

Justin Lowell passed his instrument checkride!

Keylee Cray made her first solo flight!

A flying helicopter arrived at Compass this month! This helicopter is nearly timed out, so the plan is to fly the remaining hours off and then overhaul and sell it. Our prayer is that this will enable the ministry to invest in another helicopter, and (Lord willing!) help to fund the beginning of helicopter flight training here at Compass! The goal is to be able to provide a path for missionary pilots to receive helicopter training, since the need for helicopters is increasing. Overseas ministries are turning more and more to the helicopter to enable them to reach previously unreachable areas. Please pray for the Lord's provision for a helicopter instructor to join the team here. We need a rotorwing instructor not only for missionary candidates, but also to provide Compass flight instructor Aaron Hammitt with the training he'll need in order to transition to helicopter instruction as well.

It wasn't really a milestone, but we enjoyed a visit this month from some MAF missionaries in their Kodiak! They very kindly stopped over in Shelby as they traveled up from Florida. They treated the Compass family to lunch, and then took some of us for a quick ride in the Kodiak!

Caleb and Hannah Warner had an interview with Africa Inland Missions (AIM) and were invited to continue to the next step, which will be a week of candidacy training in June. Please pray for the Lord's continued guidance for them as they near the end of their time here with Compass!

Meanwhile, flight training and practice in the maintenance shop continue! Our senior candidates, including Caleb Lopez, have been honing their skills even further by supervising and teaching the newer ones.

We are so thankful for our flight instructors: Bill, Jake, Aaron Hammitt, and Caleb Warner. And we are thankful for all of those who help in the shop, with aircraft maintenance as well as instructing. Jake, Bill, and Aaron have been very busy with Technical Evaluation and advanced flight training using the 206. Please continue praying for safety in all of our flight and maintenance operations.

Please pray for the safety of missionary pilots and mechanics overseas as well. Kevin Rideout, who was abducted from his home in Niger in October of last year, is still missing. Please pray for him and for his family.

I'll end with one final milestone, one for which the verses from Job 19 seemed very appropriate. In mid-April John got word that a missionary family, one that he had known and loved as a child in Africa, was getting ready to lose their wife and mother. Connie's illness came on very suddenly; she was diagnosed with a fast-growing cancer, and she passed away on Saturday, April 18, only weeks after she became ill. Job's words recorded in Job 19:25-27 are words of hope. He didn't know why he was suffering, but he did know God -- the same God who was already planning to come to earth in the flesh, redeem us, and defeat death itself.

We are thankful that we know where Connie is, and with Whom she is. She is now, as her husband wrote, "healed, happy, and rejoicing with her Savior who she worshipped her whole life." Please pray for Connie's husband Don and their grown children Eric and Emily, and their families, as they grieve her earthly loss.

Thank you for your prayers and for supporting the people and the work here at Compass. We are blessed to be able to partner with you in what God is doing.

Blessings,

03/31/2026

"But He was pierced for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The punishment that brought us peace was on Him,
And by His wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to our own way;
And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all."
- Isaiah 53:5-6 (NIV)

In a few days many of us will be celebrating Easter, Resurrection Day! But Good Friday came first. The verses from Isaiah tell us why Jesus went to the cross. He did it willingly, knowing exactly what was ahead. He was the perfect, spotless Lamb who died in our place, to pay the penalty for our sinfulness, the just penalty that we could never be good enough to pay.

On Sunday we remember that Jesus, the sinless Son of God, did not stay dead.

Genesis is the first book in the Bible to tell us that God saves us on the basis of faith in Him, not our works. "Abram believed the LORD, and He credited it to him as righteousness" (Genesis 15:6). In Romans Paul discusses the story and adds: "Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification." (Romans 4:23-25). Those of us who believe the Lord, like Abram did, are justified based on Jesus' death and resurrection. That is worth celebrating!

He is risen!

A few Compass notes:
Many of the Compass crew were blessed to be able to attend the 55th annual conference of the International Association of Missionary Aviation (IAMA) at Lynchburg, VA, March 17-19th. The conference was hosted by Liberty University this year. Despite some weather issues, a good group of us went and enjoyed hearing speakers and meeting representatives from many different member organizations. Compass candidate Josiah MacLellan noted that the conference helped him to see missionary aviation from the standpoint of multiple organizations, "seeing how God is using each one to reach the lost and fulfilling the Great Commission. They are all on the same team, unified under making a difference for the kingdom!"

Josiah has been working on flight training (primarily with Aaron Hammitt) and in the maintenance hangar; he met proficiency qualifications and was released to fly solo this month!

In addition to our own full-time candidates, Compass also works with some short-term candidates, sometimes at the request of a fellow missionary organization. One such trainee this month was John Loker, a missionary with MAF who was sent to us to earn his CFII rating. Despite some obstacles, including one as severe as a kidney stone that sent him to the ER one weekend, John completed his training and passed his checkride on Friday, March 20!

Daniel Iznaga, another candidate training with Compass, passed his commercial written exam on Saturday, Mar 21!

It is very cool to see the helicopter overhaul progressing! Adam is doing a great job of training Cameron and other members of the Compass team as opportunities allow. At the IAMA conference there was a recurring theme - a growing need for helicopters in missions due to their unique abilities and usefulness in reaching unreachable areas. We are thankful for this opportunity and look forward to seeing how the Lord continues to answer prayers and open doors for Compass to use the helicopter as another tool for His glory!

We are thankful for the hard work put in by all of our candidates and staff. Please pray for God's guidance as candidates (and spouses) make decisions and apply to serve with a sending organization. Please pray for continued safety in all of our operations, for provision, and that God will be honored and His purposes accomplished here.

Thank you for your prayers and all the ways you encourage and support us!

Blessings,

Super grateful that Compass Aviation was able to attend IAMA’s 55th annual conference hosted by Liberty University! It was a great time of encouragement, networking, fellowship, and teaching. Edward Graham delivered a timely closing message encouraging us to be bold for the Gospel, to get uncomfortable, and to look for new ways to share the good news of Jesus Christ around the world. It is amazing how God equips and uses each one of us in such unique ways to serve—even using airplanes and helicopters as HIS tools to make the unreachable reachable!

“As each has received a gift,
use it to serve one another,
as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”
-1 Peter 4:10

Missionary aviation is all about people. The Lord uses all kinds of tools to connect and serve people. He uses airplanes, helicopters, and wrenches -- and every tool or gifting that He has entrusted to you to serve Him and one another with.
Each person and each unique opportunity connects us to others, strengthening and growing the body of Christ and building His Kingdom.

Recently, a young man named Samuel came to Compass Aviation from Ecuador. He has been serving with Mission Aviation Fellowship in a non-flying role but was given the opportunity to earn his pilot certificate and apply for a missionary pilot role with MAF. For six weeks Samuel trained with us, building Cessna 206 flight time and gaining valuable experience in preparation for his technical evaluation.

As an Ecuadorian, Samuel's training was even more challenging because it was primarily in English, but he worked hard and did very well. It was also encouraging to hear Aaron Hammitt and Adam McCormick speak with him in Spanish, which was a great encouragement to him as well.

Flight instructors Jacob Miller and Aaron Hammitt were both grateful for the opportunity to invest in Samuel as he prepares to serve as a missionary pilot.

Please pray for Samuel as he takes what he has learned and prepares for the next steps in God’s calling on his life.

Meanwhile, our current Compass candidates are continuing to learn and grow in their skills. Just yesterday, Keylee passed her private pilot written exam! We look forward to sharing more Compass candidate training milestones in our next update.

In the shop, we also welcomed a new A&P mechanic —and answer to prayer — Cameron! John first met him last year while testing with him for Cameron’s Airframe and Powerplant ratings. His background is as a helicopter technician in the Navy. His love for the Lord is evident and we are blessed to have him as part of the Compass team!

Cameron's arrival was perfect timing. The Robinson helicopter overhaul kit for our R44 arrived on his very first day! He is now training with Adam as we develop systems and procedures for overhauling Robinson R44 helicopters. It is truly a blessing to have him as part of the Compass team.

Stay tuned — a flying helicopter for our candidates to train with is getting closer than ever! Please be praying that the Lord will connect us with the helicopter flight instructor He already has in mind.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain” (Psalm 127:1). We are grateful to be a part of what He is building. To us belongs obedience; to Him belongs the outcome.

Please continue praying for ongoing safety in all of our flight and maintenance operations. As always, we are so thankful for your prayers and support!

🎁 Flying Shoebox #1,747 -- Adryana’s Journey to Charlotte

Meet Adryana: a young woman battling chronic Bartonella and Lyme disease, yet refusing to let her illness dim the light God has placed within her. Five years ago, inspired by her grandmother who served for decades as a missionary in Latin America, Adryana set a simple goal: pack 200 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

But God had bigger plans.

Year after year, despite illness, setbacks, and exhaustion, Adryana's vision grew. This Christmas, she packed a record 1,747 shoeboxes—raising over $17,000 for shipping and an additional $10,000 to fund "The Greatest Journey" discipleship course for every child who would receive a box.

Her dream was to travel to the Samaritan’s Purse processing center in Charlotte, NC—a journey that, due to her illness, is nearly impossible by car. When her story reached Compass Aviation, pilots Aaron Watt and Caleb Warner stepped up to fly both Adryana and her mother to the processing center and also to fly them back home!

Samaritan's Purse even created a special position for her so that she could serve at the processing center in spite of her physical challenges. While there, Adryana delivered box #1,747 by hand! Samaritan’s Purse even honored her as a “Shoebox Hero.” But the real fulfillment was never the recognition; it was that 1,747 children will hear about Jesus because of her joyful endurance!

Adryana & her mother weren't the only ones who enjoyed participating in the work at the OCC processing center this year! We had a great group from Compass and our local church, Grace Bible, that came out to work a shift together (not all of us pictured here!). It is always a blessing to take part in preparing these shoebox gifts to go to children all over the world, knowing that each one is the chance for a child - and a family - to come to know Jesus.

🎆Where did 2025 go?!

As 2025 comes to a close, we’re praising God for opportunities like this to be able to use the aircraft as a tool to serve others in need. We are also very thankful for safety, for fantastic instructors, for many training milestones, for new missionary candidates, and for the exciting expansion of our mission into helicopter operations! Every step forward means more opportunities for the gospel to reach the unreached with the Good News of Jesus Christ!

🙏 Please pray with us for:

Bill Kilgore as he undergoes shoulder surgery today, and for a smooth recovery.
Recovery for those in our Compass family recovering from sickness (Tara in particular has been dealing with severe respiratory illness. We are thankful that she is now showing marked improvement).
Safety and endurance as flight & maintenance demands increase.
Provision as we grow (stay tuned...!).
Ongoing Spirit-led conversations during/after A&P testing—salvation, encouragement, boldness.

Celebrating Milestones!
Compass Aviation exists to help train and equip missionary pilots and mechanics to serve—whether that be a new student or apprentice starting at the beginning, or a seasoned pilot adding a certification to be better equipped to serve others.

Here’s a startling statistic: Did you know that it takes average of 10 years for a missionary pilot/mechanic to get fully trained and field-ready? Compass is a behind-the-scenes ministry that is all about helping bridge the gap in that marathon journey to help bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the uttermost parts of the earth, using aviation as HIS tool!

Each of these recent milestones aren't just checkboxes—they represent a lot of work and they're testimonies to God’s faithfulness and the candidates' perseverance. As Galatians 6:9 reminds us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

- Caleb Warner just passed his CFI checkride, making him a newly-certified flight instructor!

- Caleb Lopez received his instrument rating and is now working on his commercial rating!

- Daniel Iznaga completed his instrument rating and is heading towards his commercial rating as well!

- Justin Lowell is now a certified private pilot. He is pressing on with his instrument rating and has just passed his instrument written exam!

- Keylee Cray has earned her powerplant mechanic certification and is now an A&P mechanic! She is excited to have begun training for her private pilot license.

- Adam McCormick completed his commercial check-ride and just passed his JAARS maintenance Technical Evaluation (TE). He is looking forward to transitioning back to helicopters soon!

- Brett Wright was here at Compass for 6 weeks, training with Bill Kilgore to become a CFI. The Wrights serve with AIM-AIR in Uganda and are currently here in the US on home assignment for 6 months. Brett was one of Bill’s former students so it's a beautiful full-circle moment, helping to equip Brett so Brett can in turn help AIM-AIR with training and checkouts.

Over the years, more than 50 individuals who were heading into mission aviation have been helped by Compass: everything from building needed experience, to a specialized endorsement or training to achieve a needed rating, to an in-depth training program. And right now? The momentum is building!

How about this milestone? Compass now owns a used, timed-out Robinson R44 helicopter — an overhaul project! We have been blown away by how the Lord has provided for this epic project! It is a HUGE job and we are very grateful for Adam McCormick and his helicopter expertise! We have many questions that we have put before the Lord about helicopters. He has already answered a number of them, and we look forward to sharing with you how the Lord continues to answer! Meanwhile, we are holding all this with open hands to see how the Lord will continue to use Compass to help meet a huge need that exists: helicopter training for missionary aviators. Much of how we move forward with helicopters will be connected to how the Lord provides additional mechanics and additional financial resources. In the meantime, we are grateful for what we are learning and how the Lord has been providing! Please feel free to reach out to us and join in what He is doing! This is uncharted territory for us and so we are glad to know the One holding the map!

Finally, the Watt family just celebrated a milestone: Our daughter Audrey got married! We are proud of her and her husband Christian! It has been encouraging to watch how the Lord has been working in their lives and how He brought them together. What an absolutely joyous occasion!

Thank you again for your faithful prayers and support!

Serving together with the Compass team,

John & Tara Watt

"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might..."
- Ecclesiastes 9:10 (NKJV)

Today's post is courtesy of Compass staff member Aaron Hammitt:

Recently, both of our training airplanes were in the hangar for maintenance on the same day. You may think that's a bad thing, but in this case, it was a sign that good things are happening. Why? Because it means our planes have been flying lots of hours, fulfilling their intended purpose of preparing pilots and mechanics for the mission field!

Every 100 flight hours, we have to conduct a thorough inspection of each training airplane. It was "all hands on deck," working to get the inspection on N9990V done quickly in order to get the airplane back in the air soon. While it was in the hangar for inspection, we did some upgrades that we've been putting off until a convenient time.

It just so happens that our other training aircraft, N737VF, came due for its oil change at the same time. While the rest of the team kept working on the inspection, two of us completed the oil change in between scheduled flights.

We are thankful for the team that the Lord has brought together and for Compass Aviation. We are grateful for the opportunity that He has given us to help prepare missionary pilots and mechanics to be sent into the harvest.

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,
Nor shall the flame scorch you.
For I am the LORD your God,
The Holy One of Israel, your Savior..."
-Isaiah 43:2-3a (NKJV)

One year on from Hurricane Helene, these verses seem very appropriate. The storm brought record flooding, landslides, and devastation from strong wind gusts across western North Carolina - an area in which we usually don't have to worry about hurricanes at all! The rebuilding process is still going on. Many roads have been repaired, or are still in the process. Houses are being rebuilt or replaced. Businesses are still working to try to get back to normal. Of course, the lost lives can never be replaced; many people are still coming to terms with the grief of losing loved ones. Many people are still living in trailers or in other temporary housing. Rivers, lakes, and streams are still being cleaned up. Communities that were especially hard-hit, like Chimney Rock, are still struggling to rebuild because the devastation was - and still is - so extensive. (Note: Chimney Rock has recently been able to open its Main Street for business after nearly a year! They are welcoming visitors, but caution them to remember that rebuilding is still taking place).

But those of us who can call the LORD our God and our Savior have the comfort of His perspective, His presence, and His people. We know that death is only a temporary separation for those who know Him, because Jesus conquered death and will raise up all who believe in Him (John 6:40). We know that He can and does use even horrible events to bring about life and to work redemption in individuals and in families. We know that He is with us, even when bad things are happening all around us. And we were able to watch - and were blessed to participate - as the Church of God stepped up to help people who were in desperate straits. Christian organizations, missionary groups, churches, and individuals from all over the country came to North Carolina over the next weeks and months - some of them many months! - to help with search and rescue, to bring necessities like food and hygiene items, to provide medical care, to assist with cleanup, and to help rebuild.

Compass Aviation was blessed to be able to participate in the airlifts of the early days after the storm, when roads were impassible and the only way to get food and water to stranded communities was by air. JAARS did a wonderful job organizing flight after flight of volunteer pilots who wanted to help. Our candidates and flight instructors were thankful to be able to put their skills into practice by helping with disaster relief right here! For weeks, people brought cleaning supplies, food, and water to the airport here in Shelby so that we could fly it where it was needed. Once flying was no longer essential and trucks became a better means of transporting supplies, we gave the remaining donated supplies to those who were able to distribute them.

We are thankful to be able to look back at the faithfulness, goodness, and mercy of God over the past year. We are glad to have our power back, glad to be able to buy gas whenever we need to, glad to be able to do our work at the airport without the need of generators! And we are very grateful to have been used by Him to help those who suffered much worse than we did. Many of you prayed, donated, emailed, and checked on us during those days, and we are so thankful for the outpouring of love we saw from you.

Meanwhile, there are some new and exciting things taking place at Compass, and we look forward to sharing that with you very soon!

May the Lord's faithfulness, His presence, and His amazing redemption be an encouragement to you, no matter what "fires" or "floods" you might be personally facing in your life right now.

Blessings,
Tara Watt

08/29/2025

"Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying,
'Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.' This is desert.
So he arose and went.
And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eu**ch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who...had come to Jerusalem to worship, was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. Then the Spirit said to Philip, 'Go near and overtake this chariot.'

So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, 'Do you understand what you are reading?'
And he said, 'How can I, unless someone guides me?'
And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him."
- Acts 8:26-31 (NKJV)

Even in a world that is increasingly connected via email and other electronic means, where communication can take place across the globe in seconds, there is still a need for people who are willing to "arise and go." People still need someone to sit down with them and, through the Holy Spirit, to help them understand God's Word. That can be local, with those we come across through work, or school, or in our neighborhood. For some, it means going across the globe. We love to help prepare missionary candidates to do both!

Two of our candidates completed milestones recently - Adam McCormick successfully passed the examinations for his commercial pilot rating, and Caleb Lopez just earned his instrument rating! We are thanking God for gifting these young men with skill and knowledge. Justin Lowell is preparing to take his private pilot exams, and Caleb Warner is working to become a certified flight instructor. Two of our newer candidates, Keylee Cray and Josiah MacLelland, are working on flight as well as maintenance certifications. A missionary pilot needs to have a series of certificates and ratings: private, instrument, commercial, certified flight instructor (not necessarily required but often helpful), and others depending on the mission organization's requirements. Many organizations also require their pilots to be proficient A&P mechanics. This all takes time and a lot of work!

Recently the crew was able to take a field trip to the Hickory Regional Airport to celebrate these achievements. While there, we enjoyed the opportunity to tour the control tower!

Please continue praying for the Compass leadership as they deal with their daily duties while also handling some changes that have been in the works - stay tuned! But, for instance, on the office front we have been dealing with new computers to replace our aging ones (on their last legs). We have also had to update our financial software from a very old desktop format to an online one. It's been a good change, but Maggie, John, and I have been working hard to learn what feels like a whole new system! Our bank also decided to upgrade some of its own services to a new system as well, and we are learning that. So please pray for us!

Please continue praying for safety in all of our maintenance and flight operations, for provision for each need, for grace in all of our interactions. Perhaps above all, pray that each of us will be listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit and be willing, like Philip, to "come up and sit with" whoever He wishes to minister to through us. John is grateful for the many opportunities he is given through his testing of A&P applicants; please pray that many of them will come to know the Lord.

Thank you for your faithful prayers and support!

Blessings,
