Every June 14th, we take a moment to honor the Stars and Stripes for Flag Day — a symbol that represents resilience, unity, and the shared history of our nation. At Cleveland Vocational Industries, we’re proud to celebrate a day that reflects the values we work to uphold in our community.
Here are a few surprising facts about the American flag that help tell its story:
• The current 50-star design was created by a 17-year-old student in 1958 and selected by President Eisenhower from more than 3,000 submissions.
• Across our history, there have been 27 official versions of the flag, with most changes made to reflect new states joining the Union.
• The colors of the flag carry symbolic meaning: red for hardiness and valor, white for purity and innocence, and blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
• Six American flags have been planted on the moon by Apollo missions, beginning with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.
• Today’s design is the longest-running version in U.S. history, unchanged since Hawaii became a state in 1959.
We’re grateful for the chance to honor a symbol that represents opportunity and progress — values that guide the work we do every day. What does the flag mean to you? 🇺🇸
