Congratulations, we look forward to seeing this meaningful project in action.

We have just learned of a very generous grant awarded by the Hospice Cleveland County Foundation to the Our Stories Project to continue our research at the Old Cemetery and educate the public about this sacred and historically significant place! Together with financial support from Shelby Rotary Club Foundation, the Episcopal Church Foundation, the Catawba Nation Foundation, and many private individuals, we can now move into the next phase of the project: vegetation removal under the supervision of an archaeologist in the wooded area just above the field of unmarked graves in the photo below, where we expect to find more graves, and the development of a website and educational programs for local school students.

The folks of Cleveland County are an inspiration for people across the nation engaged in the important work of recognizing and preserving Black burial grounds and the memories of those buried in them! Thank you to all who have invested money, time, and talent in this important work!
