The Vermont Police Association is honored to share with you all the Vermont Transportation Board has officially approved the designation of a portion of Interstate 91, between Exits 26 and 28, as the David Chris Maland Memorial Highway.

This designation serves as a lasting tribute to Border Patrol Agent David Chris Maland and honors his service and ultimate sacrifice.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Vermont Transportation Board, American Legion Post 21 Newport (petitioner), United Federation of Police Officers, and everyone else who helped make this memorial designation possible. May all who travel this stretch of I-91 be reminded of Agent Maland’s service and the ultimate sacrifice he made in the line of duty.

A hero remembered is never forgotten and we will always remember.

During a recent trip to Washington, DC, Vermont Police Association President Christopher Hoar had the opportunity to present a VPA challenge coin to Josh Bronson Director of Education, Programs, & Visitor Experience at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

We’re honored our coin is now prominently displayed at the front desk of the National Law Enforcement Museum, representing Vermont alongside challenge coins from law enforcement agencies across the country.

If you find yourself in Washington, DC, we highly recommend taking the time to visit both the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum. While you’re there, stop by the front desk and see if you can spot a little piece of Vermont! Fittingly, it didn’t end up too far from another Vermont challenge coin… can spot which one? Yesterday, many gathered for the annual Vermont Emergency Services Memorial service to honor and remember the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our communities.

A special thank you to Vermont State Representative Ashley Bartley for coming down to the memorial and for her steadfast support of Vermont’s first responders and their families. During the last legislative session, Representative Ashley Bartley was instrumental in passing legislation extending state survivor death benefits to the families of Vermont law enforcement officers who lose their lives in the line of duty.

The Vermont Police Association is grateful for her support and for everyone who joined in remembering those who gave their lives in service to others. Their sacrifice, and the families they left behind, will never be forgotten.

Today the Vermont Police Association remembers the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the families whose lives were forever changed, and the extraordinary courage of the first responders and ordinary Americans who ran toward danger when others were trying to escape.

Let us honor those heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, not only by remembering their names and their bravery, but by also recognizing those who continue to walk in their footsteps today. Every firefighter, police officer, EMT, service member, healthcare worker, and first responder who chooses a life of public service carries forward a legacy built on courage, duty, and selflessness.

May we never allow the passage of time diminish the significance of that day or the sacrifices made. May we also never take for granted those who continue to answer the call to serve and protect their communities, knowing the risks service carry.

The Vermont Emergency Services Memorial’s annual remembrance service will take place on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. located at 317 Academy Rd, Pittsford, VT.

Each year, this important service brings Vermonters together to honor and remember the first responders, and their surviving families, who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities and our state. Their courage, dedication, and commitment to protecting the lives of others will never be forgotten.

In recognition of this year’s memorial service, the Vermont Police Association is proud to support the continued care and preservation of the Vermont Emergency Services Memorial. Throughout the month of September, a portion of all donations and memberships made to the VPA will go directly toward supporting and maintaining the VESM.

Jim has dedicated his life to serving others and now is an opportunity for our community to show what support we can for him.
