Growing up in Hawley and attending Mohawk Trail, Emily Sisum took part in field trips and classroom experiences supported by MLF without knowing it at the time. Years later, that connection came full circle when she joined us as a summer intern.

We recently received 12 beautiful baby baskets from the Betty Allen Chapter DAR, and it's hard not to smile looking at them. Each one is filled with essentials for a new baby, along with thoughtful handmade touches like little hats, crocheted ponchos, and blankets. There's even one specially prepared for a preemie!

This is the third year the Betty Allen Chapter has shared these baskets with Hilltown families through the Mary Lyon Foundation. We are so thankful for their generosity and for trusting us to pass along these special gifts. What a wonderful way to remind new parents that there are people in their corner, cheering them on as they welcome their little ones into the world.

Sometimes a little extra support can open the door to an experience a child might otherwise miss.

This past summer, the Union 38 & Mohawk Trail Family Fund helped six local students attend River Valley Day Camp by easing the cost for their families. For those students, that support meant getting to take part alongside their peers.

This is just one example of what the fund can make possible.

Created as a permanent endowment, the Union 38 & Mohawk Trail Family Fund helps meet immediate needs for students and families across the school districts. Support can include everyday needs like food, clothing, and school supplies, as well as field trips, transportation, vision and dental care, scholarships, and more.

For more than a decade, Read! Learn! Succeed! has been part of local preschool and kindergarten classrooms. Volunteers come in to share a story, and students get to leave with a book of their own. More than 51,100 books later, the program is turning the page on a new chapter.

This past summer, United Way of the Franklin & Hampshire Region, Massachusetts transitioned Read! Learn! Succeed! to the Mary Lyon Foundation. With deep roots in local schools and a longstanding commitment to education, MLF was a natural home for Read! Learn! Succeed! and its continued impact across the region.

There is something really special about hearing from a student whose next chapter is just beginning. Reading this note from a recipient of the Edwin C. Demara Scholarship was a lovely reminder of how meaningful a little extra support can be as students take that next step.

We are grateful to be entrusted with scholarship funds that help students across the region pursue their goals, and hearing directly from recipients makes that work feel especially meaningful.

Years ago, educator Liz LeBaron took a group of students on a bicycle trip to Walden Pond, where they explored the natural world and wrote poetry inspired by what they experienced.

That moment reflected so much of Liz’s approach to teaching. She believed students, especially those who struggled in traditional classroom settings, deserved opportunities to experience reading and writing in ways that felt meaningful and connected to the world around them.

Today, that spirit lives on through the Liz LeBaron Memorial Scholarship, created by her grandson and his wife for local students pursuing careers in education.

Say hello to one of our newest future Mohawk Trailblazers, Marlo! Our Development Associate Sarah welcomed her son on July 3, weighing 8 lbs., 9 oz. Marlo recently stopped by MLF to meet the team, and it’s safe to say he made a great first impression. We’re so happy for Sarah, Jovie, and Ethan and wish their family continued joy as they enjoy this special new chapter together.
