For the past month we’ve been working on memorizing Psalm 23. We set this challenge for our family, but wanted to open it up for other families too, and several joined in! It was so awesome to learn together and dig into God’s word with other families. Here are some interesting things we learned from our research and from the other participants:
Did you know sheep have rectangular pupils, so they can see a lot all at once?
Also, some sheep in desert locations can store water in their tails (like a camel stores water). They are called fat tail sheep.
Sheep are really smart, BUT they also blindly follow the lead sheep which can cause them all to get lost or get into trouble. That’s why they need a good shepherd to lead them.
Jesus is our Good Shepherd, and we are the sheep who need guidance so we don’t wander off or get into trouble.
Many parents talked about how awesome and touching it was to see their children working hard to memorize and understand God’s word. They saw their kids take initiative and make connections between the Bible, stories from Sunday School, and their everyday life.
As adults, we found it harder to memorize the whole chapter than we thought it would be. I know I thought six verses would be easy, but it really was a good challenge! We are glad we were able to memorize this passage so it will be easier to recall on days we need it most.
This year, we haven’t been able to do the things through Mobile Missions Network that we normally do each summer, but it was fun to try a different way to outreach to families, and we are thankful God gives us new ideas for different seasons in our lives.
We are planning another Bible memorization challenge coming up soon. Stay posted if you’d like to join!
