Muscle Shoals Starbucks Workers Vote to Unionize

(SHOALS INSIDER) Employees at the Starbucks location on Avalon Avenue in Muscle Shoals have voted overwhelmingly to join Starbucks Workers United, making it the fourth Starbucks store in Alabama to unionize and the first in the Shoals area.
According to records from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), workers voted 13-1 in favor of union representation. The election involved baristas and shift supervisors employed at the store, with 18 workers eligible to vote and 14 ballots cast. The union certified to represent employees is Workers United, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
The Muscle Shoals vote comes as Starbucks Workers United continues to expand nationwide. The organization recently announced that more than 700 Starbucks locations across the United States have voted to unionize since the campaign began in 2021. Labor leaders identified the Muscle Shoals store as one of the locations that helped push the movement past that 700 store milestone.
Supporters of the union say employees are seeking a stronger voice in workplace decisions, including scheduling, staffing levels, wages, and working conditions. Starbucks Workers United has also been advocating for a nationwide labor agreement covering unionized stores. Hourly wages at the location are between $15 and $16 per hour.
The Muscle Shoals store joins other Alabama Starbucks locations that have unionized in recent years, including stores in Birmingham, Scottsboro, and Huntsville.
While hundreds of Starbucks stores across the country have voted to unionize, negotiations between Starbucks and Workers United continue at the national level. Both sides have stated they remain engaged in discussions regarding future contracts for unionized employees.
The union victory marks a significant moment for organized labor in Northwest Alabama and places the Muscle Shoals location among a growing number of Starbucks stores nationwide seeking collective bargaining representation.
