On June 4, the community and Rockline Industries worked together to clear invasive buckthorn from GLC's Grasshopper Hill Preserve. Common Buckthorn is a common (no pun intended) woody invasive species in Wisconsin that outcompetes native vegetation for resources, and can completely degrade habitat. At Grasshopper Hill, the buckthorn created thick walls all the way up to the edge of the trail in some areas! While there is a lot more to do, the volunteers worked hard to cut and treat as much buckthorn as they could. We even found a few smaller native trees underneath, which now have room to grow!

This morning, community members and neighbors came together at GLC’s Hunner Preserve. We first picked up trash from the roadways, then removed non-native and invasive species, and finally better marked trail boundaries. During our work, we were joined by a special guest, Sally Hunner. Her family donated Hunner Preserve to GLC in 2020, with the hope of continuing their legacy of conservation. Thank you to everyone who participated.

We’d love for you to get involved! Visit www.glaciallakes.org for details on more upcoming workdays, our annual fundraiser, and Land Trust Days.

Community members and Rockline Industries joined forces on May 27th at our Willow Creek Preserve. Together, they planted and watered 120 native sedges and 23 native trees and shrubs; almost 150 new plants! All this was not only made possible by our passionate volunteers, but also from donations from our 2nd Annual Native Plant Sale with LaValley Home and Garden. Not only that, but the volunteers removed 13 garbage bags full of invasive species - like dame's rocket and garlic mustard (easily over 50 pounds). Our hearts are full with the donations and dedicated time to make this happen.

May 16th marked the first Water Action Volunteers (WAV) day of the season! Dedicated volunteers took off into Willow Creek Preserve's waters to test for macroinvertebrates, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, stream depth, velocity, and temperature. With a mixture of in-field chemistry and hands-on equipment, our WAV volunteers collect stream data that is used in many decisions on the property.

In addition, we got to test our brand-new flow probe, purchased from a grant from the Land Trust Alliance, which allowed us to expand our water monitoring program even more.

Thank you to all our supporters for the success of the 2nd Annual Spring Native Plant sale in partnership with LaValley Home and Garden. Profits supported GLC's mission while the community stepped up to buy native plants, helping criti
cal biodiversity. We had record-breaking orders. Rob Zimmer was on hand today to answer questions and help you choose your plants. LaValley worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure all the plants were healthy. Volunteers, staff, and Board members provided nonstop customer service over the last two days. Thank you to Roadhouse for donating a raffle prize, selling their baked bread and peanuts on site and donating 100% of proceeds back to GLC to continue our mission. The last 48 hours have been wonderfully enriching engaging with our supporters and talking plants. Thank you all!
Stay tuned for 2026 Fall Shrub and Tree sale info.

On Saturday May 16 team GLC Chickadees made their 6th NRF Great Wisconsin Birdathon run. Three birders began the day at 4:45am to capture the early morning birds (warblers, let's be honest!) and then headed to some beautiful, bird-filled GLC Conservation Easements to start our count. Led by expert birder and GLC volunteer Alex Mann, Team Chickadees completed over 13 hours of straight birding, covered more than 17,000 steps, and set a new GLC Birdathon record of 138 species! It was a small but mighty group of fun-loving (and delirious by hour 12) and bird loving birders. Highlights: an incredible display of Wilson's Phalarope, warblers and a normally shy Black-billed Cuckoo. All the money raised will go towards the NRF Bird Protection Fund and back to GLC for bird restoration. Thank you to the team and everyone who supports us.
