To participate in making your community a better place, you shouldn’t have to attend a boring public meeting full of obscure procedures, nor should you have to be comfortable getting up and speaking in front of group.
When we rely on ‘Public Comment’ at committee meetings, we can’t expect to hear from a broad swath of the community. A strong community is one built by many hands and many voices, which is why the public engagement happening next week is exciting.
May 12th and May 13th will mark Sheboygan’s first ever ‘Safety Days’, featuring a series of pop-up events, like group walks, group bike rides, children's ‘Tiny Town’ activities and opportunities for informal conversations, scattered throughout the city.
Consultants from MSA Services, City Staff, Elected officials, and Volunteers will be showing up to places like Paradigm Coffee and Music, Mead Public Library , an Shoreline Metro Bus Stop, Uptown Social, the Sheboygan County YMCA and 3 Sheeps Brewing, to- quite literally- meet people where they are at.
For those of you interested in taking a more active role in providing feedback and discovering opportunities for improvement, there are a series of ‘Walk Audits’ being held during the day on Tuesday and Wednesday to help identify areas for improvement, as well as a bike audit, a roughly 4.2 mile, slow pace, flat ride at 6pm on Wednesday. These audits will highlight areas with safety concerns, and ask participants to actively observe and note what’s working, and what isn’t.
If you’re able to join a walk or bike audit- great, we’ll see you there! If not, maybe you’ll run into one of the groups along your daily journeys to provide feedback. Otherwise, feedback can submitted using the link in our bio- or, just send us a message, and we’ll direct you to the site to give your feedback on.
And hey, if you’re that kind of person, keep showing up to city council and committee meetings- that really does make a big difference. It just shouldn’t be the only way to participate, so we’re glad to see efforts to change that.
So please, find a way to attend a safety days session, and keep doing what you can to make Sheboygan a .
