The Buckeye Trail Association

The Buckeye Trail Association The Buckeye Trail winds around Ohio over 1450 miles, from Lake Erie to the Ohio River and back again! Because it is a loop, it is also in essence, endless.
(1)

First envisioned in the late 1950's as a trail from the Ohio River to Lake Erie, the Buckeye Trail evolved into a large loop, branching both north and east from Cincinnati. The separate legs rejoin in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park near Cleveland, and complete the trip to the lake. You may start a hike at any point and hike as long as you want without ever reaching an end! The Buckeye Trail Ass

ociation . . . The Buckeye Trail Association is a large, strong body of volunteers who maintain and promote the trail. Though the entire route is marked by 2" by 6" blue blazes. The Buckeye Trail continues to change and improve. The BTA looks for ways to move road sections off the roads, and to upgrade those off-road sections to high quality trail. But the Buckeye Trail Association is more than just a management organization. It is also a social group. Several events are planned each year, both formally by the Association, and by individual members. Most of these events are open to the public. You can check out the events page for a list of many of these. Annually, the Association holds a gathering for all members, usually at a location near the trail. For three days, members are entertained and educated through a series of workshops and presentations. Several hikes are usually scheduled around the area. Finally, the annual business meeting, open to all members, is held during the gathering, giving every member a voice in the operation and future of the Association. BTA MISSION: The Buckeye Trail Association is the leader in building, maintaining, protecting and promoting use of Ohio's longest scenic hiking trail for our citizens, communities and partners. We provide outdoor recreation, opportunities to volunteer, education, access to the varied resources of Ohio and local economic benefits. BTA VISION: The Buckeye Trail, Ohio's State Scenic Trail, is a sustainable hiking trail that provides a safe and unique experience throughout the state reflecting the diverse resources, people and stories of Ohio. The trail is a dedicated, recognized and protected route developed and maintained by the Buckeye Trail Association, an organization reflective of the diversity of the trail. The Buckeye Trail Association works in close partnership with communities, organizations and agencies around Ohio creating a legacy for present and future generations. You are invited to join the Buckeye Trail Association. Simply fill out our membership form and send it to the address on the form. You will receive a new member's packet and the quarterly newsletter, Trailblazer. But most of all, you receive the satisfaction of helping maintain and improve one of America's longest and most diverse trails.

For Everyday Trail Hero Meg “Rock Lizard” Dailey, trail work is simple: if something needs done, she does it. Between school, hiking, and everything else that fills her time, Meg volunteers on the Buckeye Trail alongside her dad—painting blazes, pruning, swamping, and clearing debris to keep the trail open and easy to follow.

She knows firsthand what happens when maintenance falls behind. After hiking through miles of blowdowns on the Appalachian Trail, she saw how quickly a hike can turn into hours of climbing over fallen trees instead of enjoying the experience.
Now, she’s often the one helping clear the way for the next person who comes through.

“It would be really irritating,” she says. “You’d spend a lot more time climbing over things instead of enjoying the hike.” For Meg, the work isn’t complicated. She likes being outside. She likes the work. And if she starts something, she wants to finish it.

The Village of Morrow is officially a Buckeye Trail Town!

With the Buckeye Trail running through Main Street along the Little Miami State Park Trail, Morrow is a perfect stop for hikers looking for camping, food, shopping, local businesses, and small-town charm.

This exciting designation became official on May 16, 2026, thanks to the efforts of Memorable Morrow, local residents, business owners, and village leaders.

The celebration at Miranda’s Ice Cream Shop marked the beginning of a new partnership focused on welcoming trail visitors and showcasing everything Morrow has to offer. Congratulations, Morrow!

Behind every Buckeye Trail Town is a relationship—and for Trail Town Coordinator Kim Love-Ottobre, building those relationships starts long before a designation is ever announced.

Kim works with communities across Ohio to help them see the Buckeye Trail as more than a line on a map. Through conversations with local leaders, businesses, and organizations, she helps towns recognize the opportunities the trail can bring through recreation, tourism, and community connection.

Much of that work happens quietly in the background: answering questions, maintaining communication, building trust, and helping partnerships grow over time. But those relationships are what help turn communities into welcoming destinations for hikers and supporters of the Trail.

Big wins for Ohio trails!

Yesterday at the Ohio Statehouse, leaders from across the state celebrated the passage of House Concurrent Resolution 13—supporting Congressional designation of the Buckeye Trail as a National Trail! Huge thanks to Rep. Jim Hoops, Sen. Steve Wilson, Sen. Tim Shaffer, and ODNR Director Mary Mertz for championing Ohio’s outdoor future.

Later, during Ohio Tourism Day, members of the Central Ohio Chapter connected with visitors from around the state, sharing all the adventure, beauty, and community the Buckeye Trail has to offer.

Ohio’s trails are more than paths through the woods—they’re a powerful part of our tourism economy and a source of pride for communities across the state.

For Everyday Trail Hero Matthew Edmonds, the work isn’t about what hikers see—it’s about what they don’t.

In the Wilderness Chapter, where the trail is rugged and often hard to follow, Matthew focuses on the steady, repeatable work that keeps it open: pruning and blazing. “If it’s done right, people don’t even think about it,” he says.

But without that consistency, it doesn’t take long for things to change. Overgrowth creeps in, markings fade, and the path becomes harder to follow—especially in remote areas where fewer hikers pass through.

The weather may not have cooperated, but spirits stayed high all weekend. And a big congratulations to all the first-timers who found their mushrooms this year — that’s a moment you never forget! Best of all, nobody left camp empty-handed.
Already looking forward to next year!

For Everyday Trail Hero Christina Bergman, Section Supervisor of the St. Marys Section, the volunteer work she does isn’t just about keeping a trail open. It’s about making sure the experience holds up—for the next person who comes through, and the one after that.

"I’m a hands-on person,” she says. “If something needs done, I want to be out there doing it.” That’s still how she approaches the work. But she knows how much more could happen with more consistent support.
