Meg’s Book Loop: “By Leatherwood Creek: A Personal and Natural History Along a Small Creek in the Ohio Hill Country”
Written By: Margret “Meg” Sondey
Spring 2026 Volume 59 No. 1

📚 How much history, wildlife, and wonder can be found along one small Ohio creek?

In this issue, Meg Sondey reviews By Leatherwood Creek, a fascinating look at the natural and human stories hidden along a single stream in Ohio's hill country. It's a reminder that every trail crossing has a story—and sometimes an entire book behind it.

🌿 Curious? Read Meg's full review in the Spring 2026 Trailblazer and discover why this creek-side journey is worth exploring.

🥾📚 Throwback Thursday takes us all the way back to the Spring 1972 edition of the BTA Trailblazer — Volume 5, No. 1!

This incredible early issue featured winter hike plans for the Burr Oak region complete with an awesome vintage map of Burr Oak Lake State Park, updates on the developing North Country Trail, and even one of the earliest “Recipes for Happy Hiking” features! 🍲🔥

One trail cooking tip from 1972 introduced hikers to “The Cooking Bag” — promising “no stirring, no sticking, no burning!” while making camp meals easier on the trail. Some hiking advice truly never goes out of style. 😄

From historic trail planning to old-school backpacking wisdom, this issue is a fascinating snapshot of the Buckeye Trail’s early years and the volunteers who helped build the adventure we enjoy today. 💙🌲

🥾⏳🥾 Throwback Thursday: 🥾⏳🥾

For this Throwback Thursday we bring the Spring 1991 (Vol. 24, No. 1) — when rail-trails were exploding across the U.S.! Check out this great graphic on page 11 showing the surge in rail-trail activity that was transforming old rail lines into beautiful new trails. Visionaries were already seeing the future of multi-use paths we love today.

And because no hike is complete without good fuel… flip to page 13 for delicious Slovak Pancakes and the cozy hostel cooking instructions that came with them. Perfect post-hike breakfast! 🥞

Also be sure to check out the hilarious spelling lesson on Page 13.

Who else is craving a trail adventure (and some pancakes) right now?

🥾⏳🥾 Throwback Thursday: 🥾⏳🥾

Pure Buckeye Trail Magic from February 2001 🌲🍂
Digging into the Buckeye Trail Association’s Trailblazer archives never fails to remind us why this 1,400+ adventure, looping through Ohio’s hills, farms, forests, and communities holds such a special place in so many hearts.

In this delightful write-up, the “circuiteers” share their brisk November 11–12, 2000 hike through Lorain and Medina counties. Their tale is full of classic trail humor: accidentally driving off without John Rethman at Fort’s Tavern in Wellington (and the need to have to vote to go back for him!), to chatting with a local named “Fez” about the windmills aerating his pond, and cozying up around the campfire at Findley State Park. It perfectly captures the Buckeye Trail experience!

Be sure to read this full article found in the archive! While you’re in the archive, don’t stop at just this story! Flip through the entire issue for more gems: Great photos and recap from the November 2000 Trail Maintainers Meeting — celebrating the dedicated volunteers (our Everyday Trail Heroes) who keep the Buckeye Trail alive. Along with updates on new trail construction, the upcoming Annual Meeting at Hocking College, work parties, and so much more that shows the pride and hard work we pour into this trail.
