October holds a special place in the history of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce. This month established two pillars of our Chamber: the Shawnee Economic Development Council and Visit Shawnee Kansas.
In October 1994, the Shawnee Economic Development Council was established to provide economic development services to Shawnee. Mayor Jim Allen, City Council leaders, and the Chamber joined forces to create a unique public-private partnership.
The SEDC drives growth by attracting, retaining, and expanding businesses while developing a strong workforce. Since the fall of 1994, the SEDC has grown from a handful of members to a membership of more than 80 businesses.
Each year, the Shawnee Economic Development Council holds the annual Shawnee Business Awards. This year's Business Awards take place on Thursday, November 19th:

In October 1999, the Shawnee Convention and Visitor's Bureau (later called Visit Shawnee) was formed to provide convention and tourism services.
For over two decades, Visit Shawnee has put our city on the map by drawing sports tournaments (like the Top Gun Invitational and George Brett 4x4 Volleyball Showdown), conventions, and regional visitors to our local hotels, restaurants, and historic Downtown Shawnee.
For 14 years, the tourism wing of the Chamber was championed by the beloved former Executive Director of Visit Shawnee, Kevin Fern, up until his passing in 2022. Kevin brought unmatched passion to promoting his hometown; you could often find him blowing up balloons at local festivals, cheering on sports teams, or greeting visitors with a warm smile.
Visit Shawnee is led today by Visit Shawnee Chair Jim Neighbor, and Executive Director Beth Ansell. You can find Visit Shawnee in action this week! Stop by their booth at the Moonlight Market: Halloween Hoopla in Downtown Shawnee TONIGHT, Thursday, October 15th, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM to grab local guides, say hello, and celebrate the fall season with our tourism team!
