Eighty-four years ago today, Lieutenant Edward "Butch" O'Hare was flying above the Pacific when his aircraft carrier, the USS Lexington, detected an incoming wave of Japanese bombers. The ship's fighter planes had already been scrambled to intercept an earlier attack, leaving O'Hare and his wingman as the last line of defense.

Then disaster struck: his wingman's guns jammed.

Suddenly, O'Hare was alone—one pilot against a formation of nine enemy bombers bearing down on his ship. Most men would have retreated. Butch O'Hare dove straight into them.

With breathtaking skill and courage, he sliced through the formation again and again, expending just 60 rounds of ammunition per kill. When the smoke cleared, he had shot down five bombers and damaged another. The Lexington was saved.

For his actions, O'Hare became the U.S. Navy's first flying ace of World War II and was awarded the Medal of Honor. President Franklin Roosevelt called him "a fighting man without peer."

Tragically, Butch O'Hare disappeared during a nighttime combat mission in 1943. He was just 29 years old.

But his name lives on in a way few heroes can claim. In 1949, Chicago renamed its bustling Orchard Depot Airport in his honor. Today, millions of travelers pass through O'Hare International Airport—many with no idea they're walking through a living memorial to a young pilot who, on this day in 1942, refused to let his ship go down.
