Alianza Codefem USA

Alianza Codefem USA We are a group of women who are working in solidarity with CODEFEM, towards ensuring basic human rights for women in Guatemala.

Upon meeting with the community women in Guatemala, Alianza members decided to support two food security projects. These projects will allow the women to provide themselves and their families with a variety of fresh food that they currently cannot access, as well as an income. In Santa Maria a group of women have planned to rear chickens. The costs include:
Initial purchase of 200 Lowman Brown Chi

ckens
Vaccinations for the chickens,
Initial purchase of chicken feed, to last the women three months
Construction of a protected and insulated housing structure
A year of technical support from a local trained professional for a year
Ongoing CODEFEM empowerment/educational workshops. The total cost for this project is $7,662.35. In Tectitan, the women's group has designed a family garden initiative. This community has been particularly devastated by many natural disasters over the last decade. Important infrastructure--main roads, town buildings, and houses-- have been damaged, and remain in disrepair. A large percentage of the land in Tectitan has been washed out and eroded; due to poor soil conditions, food insecurity is a growing concern within this community. The expenses for this project include:
Technical support to teach the women how to effectively grow a rich variety of crops in their area, and how to work with poor soil conditions. Composting tutorial
Administrative/business workshops to teach profit maximization when selling the surplus
Nutritional workshops to demonstrate how to nutritiously prepare the vegetables. Land preparation
Purchasing of seeds
Ongoing CODEFEM empowerment/educational workshops
The total cost for this project is $11,740.

The PULSERA Project was a hit with the students at HVRHS. For 2 weeks AFS students sold the handmade bracelets from Nicaragua. Each bracelet cost $7. We sent $5 back to Nicaragua for the benefit of the artisans and used the $2 to help with funding the FOOD SECURITY PROJECTS in Guatemala. Altogether we raised close to $500.
Gracias a todos por su solidaridad!

We want to express our gratitude for the students' solidarity with CODEFEM and also our gratitude to ALL who purchased the coffee.
