On Wednesday, June 3rd the NEC voted on a change to Standing Rule XI. Units, the standing rule is now as follows:

Section 6. Membership eligibility through the service of a living veteran may be established by presentation of a current The American Legion membership card. Membership eligibility through the service of a deceased veteran may be established by certification of the deceased veteran’s proof of military service by the post adjutant or other post officer or by the unit secretary or other unit officer. Joining online requires an affidavit of eligibility; the Unit may request a copy of the veteran’s proof of military service.

What does this change mean?

The unit secretary or other unit officer may verify the eligibility of a potential member and sign the application. By expanding the options for who may review and sign membership applications, we are removing barriers and allowing the processing of membership to be more efficient. It is not a requirement that the unit review eligibility, if a unit wishes to continue to work with their legion post, they may do so.

This Memorial Day, the Shakopee American Legion Auxiliary Unit #2 stood side by side with the American Legion Post #2, Shakopee VFW #4046, and the Shakopee Honor Guard. Together, we honored not just the memory of those who gave everything for our freedom, but the living legacy of service that continues in our town.

One of the most moving moments was presenting 13 graduating seniors—young men and women who have chosen to step up and serve our country—with their graduation military cords. Watching them stand with their heads held high, ready to embark on a path that takes real courage, was honestly humbling. We also had the privilege of giving their parents blue star banners, a symbol of both pride and sacrifice that every military family carries with them.

We awarded three remarkable 8th grade girls with the Good Citizenship Award. Knowing they’re already making a difference, reminded us that the future is in good hands.

Today was about remembrance, gratitude, and community. It was about honoring the past, celebrating the present, and believing in the next generation. Thank you to everyone who came out, who supported, who remembered. Shakopee is more than just a place—it’s people who care deeply, stand together, and lift each other up.

To all who serve and all who support them: you are the heart of this town. We are so grateful for you.

Thanks to Marjorie for taking these photos!

Today is National Poppy Day—a day to remember, honor, and support our veterans and their families. The red poppy has become a powerful symbol of remembrance, thanks in large part to the American Legion Auxiliary. Every year, these dedicated volunteers distribute poppies across the country, inviting us all to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women.

When you wear a poppy, you’re not just pinning on a flower. You’re showing gratitude for those who never made it home, and for those who still carry the weight of service. Every donation for a poppy goes directly to help veterans, military families, and active-duty members in need—a small act with a huge impact.

So today, if you see the red poppy, know what it means. Wear yours proudly, and remember: Together, we can honor the past and support those still with us 🌺

Many people are familiar with the Blue Star and Gold Star traditions, but questions often arise about the meaning and history behind military family service banners. 🇺🇸

💙 **Blue Star Service Banner**
The Blue Star Service Banner tradition began during World War I and represents a family with a loved one currently serving in the Armed Forces.

💛 **Gold Star Service Banner**
Traditionally, if a service member dies while serving our nation, the blue star is replaced with a gold star. Gold Star Families have long been recognized as families who have experienced the loss of a loved one in military service.

💚 **Green Star Families®**
Green Star Families of America was created to bring visibility, education, and recognition to the families left behind after a veteran dies by su***de. Support for H.R. 6022, the Green Star Veterans Service Act, seeks formal recognition of these families and their sacrifices.

You may also hear references to White Star, Silver Star, and other names. Some are used by organizations, awareness efforts, or specific causes, but not all are federally recognized military family service banner traditions.

We deeply respect and honor the long-standing Blue Star and Gold Star traditions and the families they represent. Green Star recognition is intended to build upon that legacy by bringing visibility to families impacted by veteran su***de whose experiences have often remained unseen.

Different stories. Shared sacrifice. Every family matters. 💚
