Rest in peace, Mr. Hardaway.

Editor’s note: "Shaker in Profile: Najee Hardaway," by Sports Writing Reporters Ethan Scheer and Julian Vaquera-LIttle, first appeared in print June 1, 2025 on page 27 of “Shaker in Profile,” The Shakerite’s first-ever profile edition. Yesterday, the district shared via email that Mr. Hardaway, a grade 4 teacher at Lomond Elementary School, had passed away. “Mr. Hardaway was an outstanding educator who cared deeply for our students. He was a Shaker Heights graduate and beloved staff member who was recognized as a leader among his colleagues. Mr. Hardaway was a cherished member of our Lomond and Shaker Heights Schools community both inside and outside of the classroom,” Dr. David Glasner wrote. 📢 Urge Support to HB 719 - Restore Educators' Voice to the STRS Board

Representative Jim Hoops (R-Napoleon) has introduced House Bill 719 (HB 719). This bill would restore the voice of educators in the direction of the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS) Board. Last summer, in the biennial budget bill, a provision was slipped in at the last minute to radically change the composition of the STRS Board. The provision called for four political appointees to be added to the Board and four elected members representing active and retired teachers to be removed over time. The change would also prohibit members of the system from serving as Chair or Vice Chair of the Board.

Ohio Education Association strongly supports HB 719 and thanks Representative Hoops for introducing the bill. OEA members are encouraged to contact their state representative and urge them to support the bill. 👇

Our labor movement could not exist without the work of Black union members and leaders.

During and every month, America’s unions celebrate the elders and ancestors who came before us and those fighting now for racial justice in the workplace and beyond.
