Red Alert 🚨 : We need help assisting one of our own firefighters!! Chardon Firefighter / Paramedic Dominic Shea (also a full-time Parma firefighter) has been battling melanoma since 2022. Despite his strong fight, the cancer has now metastasized to his brain and is considered stage IV. Please join us for a benefit dinner to help support Dominic and his wife, Jess, through their journey. All proceeds will go directly to the Shea family.

Dominic’s father, Kevin, was a Chardon firefighter for many years. They are all part of our “fire family”. Please help us help them. If you can’t attend the dinner in Parma, consider simply donating. Contact one of the firefighters on the flyer for more info.

On this date, 109 years ago, recently established Shaker Heights Village established it's fire department. The village fathers chose recently retired Cleveland Fire Department Captain John K. Irvin as their first Fire Chief. It would be nine more days before he had any fire apparatus to respond with as the new 1917 American LaFrance pumper wouldn’t arrive until October 9th, coincidentally, national fire prevention day.

Chief Irvin in his own words in his first entry into his daily journal:

“Monday, October 1, 1917

Captain John K. Irvin has been this day appointed and assigned to duty as Chief of the Fire Department of Shaker Heights. Reported for duty as per order of his honor W.J. Van Aken, Mayor Shaker Heights.

7:30 AM reported, and as apparatus had not arrived, spent the day doing office work and going around the village with Mr. Arnold going to lunch at 12:00 and returning at 1:00 PM.

(George J. Arnold was VP & General Manager of the Van Sweringen Company and owned a notable early residence in Shaker Heights designed by architect Reynolds H Hinsdale)

I made arrangements with Mr. Arnold to call me at night at my home in case of fire or other necessity as he would be called and my residence is close to his. 6:00 PM departed for home.”

What began with Jack O'Neill at the Shaker Heights Fire Department in 1951 grew into a family tradition of service carried on by his sons and grandsons.
