🌈 Celebrating Pride Through Q***r Design 🏳️‍🌈

This Pride Month, the new MDASLA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee is launching a media series highlighting design-related books, films, and stories during key moments of cultural awareness.

We begin with a reading list that explores the intersections of queerness, space, and design—offering both visual inspiration and deeper insight into the histories and futures of LGBTQ+ communities.

Stay tuned as we continue to share media that broadens our collective understanding of identity, place, and design.

🌿 How can garden design seamlessly connect home and nature?🌿

Perched on a hill in Sparks Glencoe, Maryland, Wild Pines was designed to embrace its stunning farmland and woodland surroundings. The homeowners—an interior designer and a general contractor—partnered with FORM Garden Design to create a landscape that blends effortlessly with their modern farmhouse.

Key Design Highlights:
1️⃣ Welcoming Front Entry – A new bluestone walkway and birch trees soften the garage and enhance the entry experience.
2️⃣ Seamless Backyard Transformation – Removing an asphalt driveway made way for a natural flow with gravel paths, raised garden beds, and scenic gathering spaces.
3️⃣ Four-Season Planting – A mix of native grasses and seasonal blooms for year-round beauty with minimal irrigation.
4️⃣ A Perfect Outdoor Retreat – A covered patio with breathtaking views, ideal for dining and relaxation.

The result? A space that feels both curated and wild, where architecture and landscape exist in harmony. 🌲

🌿 How can historic sites be reimagined for modern communities? 🌿

Once a National Guard Armory (est. 1903), the Pikesville Armory served as a military training ground for over a century before being decommissioned in 2016. Now, it’s being transformed into a dynamic community space! Led by Unknown Studio and Ziger | Snead Architecture, in collaboration with the Pikesville Armory Foundation, Seawall, and Onyx, this visionary plan integrates landscape architecture, urban design, and civil engineering while honoring the site’s legacy.

1️⃣ Military-Inspired Design – Organized walkways, plantings, and programs aligned along axes and gridded quadrants.
2️⃣ Tree-Lined Promenades – A shaded circuit guiding visitors through the site.
3️⃣ Armory Place – A new gathering hub with destination play, an events lawn, a market plaza, and a beer garden & café.
4️⃣ Recreation & Sports Fields – Creating opportunities for team sports and community tournaments.
5️⃣ Wayfinding & Placemaking Elements – A Play Tower and Stage structure enhance site identity and navigation.
