The Reading Room Pittsburgh, Inc. To promote literacy, foster a love of reading, and ensure every child - regardless of socioeconomic status - has free access to high-quality books.

01/09/2026

Today, I'm sharing bittersweet news: The Reading Room Pittsburgh, Inc. has ceased operations effective January 1, 2026.

With the full support of our Board of Directors, my family and I have made the decision to relocate to Paris, France in pursuit of a safer life for our children outside the United States. Whatever symbols remain, the civic fabric that once held us together feels profoundly damaged.

After thoughtful consideration of our options and what it takes to sustainably lead this work, stepping away is the responsible choice.

I'm deeply grateful to every donor, volunteer, partner, and family who helped
bring The Reading Room to life. In a short period of time, we were able to put thousands of free books into the hands of children who needed them most do so in a fun and dignified fashion.

With Board approval, I've begun distributing remaining inventory and resources to other like-minded organizations so the impact can continue beyond our final day.

To anyone reading this: please take special care of your children (and of each other) during this dark period in American history. I truly hope that you can be the adults they can count on.

Thank you for believing in this mission and for showing up for kids.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Sincerely,

Ryan Scarola

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU 💙

Thank you for being part of The Reading Room Pittsburgh, Inc.’s very first Giving Tuesday.

Because of you, we raised $500 toward our $5,000 “Give the Gift of Reading” goal—that’s already enough to put 20 Literacy-to-Go Kits into the hands of local kids who might not otherwise have books of their own.

It may be the first 10% of our goal, but it’s also the first chapter of a much bigger story. Every dollar you gave yesterday moves us closer to:

💙stocking free book tables at schools and community events
💙sending home books kids get to keep, not return
💙helping teachers spark a love of reading that lasts long after the holidays

Whether you donated, forwarded an email, liked a post, or simply took a moment to read about our work—thank you. You helped put The Reading Room on the Giving Tuesday map, and that matters.

Our campaign continues through December 31, and we’re excited to see how much more reading joy this community can spark by year’s end. But today, we just want you to know how grateful we are to have you in our corner.

From all of us at The Reading Room: thank you for believing that every child deserves a stack of stories with their name on the inside cover.

With gratitude,

P.S. If you didn’t get a chance to give yesterday and would like to help us reach the full $5,000 goal, you can still make a year-end gift here: https://givebutter.com/readingroom-EOY2025

Today is Giving Tuesday, and I’m asking for a very personal kind of help. 💙📚

Through The Reading Room, we’re putting free, high-interest books directly into kids’ hands so they can build little home libraries of their own.

This Giving Tuesday, your generosity does more than donate books. It invests in a place where young readers become future storytellers, thinkers, and community leaders.

If you’re able, I’d be incredibly grateful for your support:

If you can’t give right now, a share or comment goes a long way too. Thank you for cheering us on. 💛

Give the Gift of Reading!

This season of gratitude, take a moment to give back in a way that lasts. A child’s first books can spark a lifetime of confidence, curiosity, and possibility.

Now imagine a six-year-old who has never owned a book. Not one they could keep. Not one that was theirs. For far too many kids in our region, that’s real life.

Your support of The Reading Room changes that. You put free, high-quality books directly into children’s hands, especially in neighborhoods where books are scarce at home. Every gift helps a child build skills, imagination, and hope.

Be the reason a child holds their very first book and knows it belongs to them.

Because of you, 17,000 children across Greater Pittsburgh discovered the joy of reading this year. 💙

You helped fill classrooms with laughter and imagination, and 7,000 books found their way into tiny hands.

As 2025 comes to a close, you can give that same gift to even more children in 2026.

Help us reach our $10,000 goal and keep the magic of reading alive.
