In a new feature for Garden & Gun, alumna Lindsey Liles, C’16, profiles fellow Sewanee graduate Stephen Alvarez, C’87—an award-winning photographer and explorer documenting some of the oldest art in the world. Descending into hidden chambers across the Southeast and beyond, Alvarez is uncovering and preserving artwork created more than 1,500 years ago and offering a rare glimpse into the lives and imaginations of those who came before us. His latest book, Rock Art: An American Story, brings that work together in a powerful visual record.

Like Indiana Jones with a camera, the photographer and adventurer Stephen Alvarez descends into otherworldly caves to discover, illuminate, and preserve millennia-old drawings

It’s publication day for Sewanee Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology Sherry Hamby’s new book, Stronger Than You Think. Backed by more than 30 years of research, the book makes a powerful case: Resilience isn’t something you’re born with—it’s something you can build. With practical tools and the idea of a “resilience portfolio,” Hamby offers a roadmap for bouncing back, moving forward, and thriving.

We’ve never been in greater need of resilience. We’ve also never misunderstood it more. At one point or another, life will break us open. This is when we need resilience most—but as...

A video of Jon Meacham’s Baccalaureate address from Saturday morning is now available for viewing. “Above all, remember in hours of joy and of darkness that Sewanee has taught you that the important thing is not whether you lead *the* good life but *a* good life—a life in which conscience and history can lead us anew from principle to practice, and limitation to possibility, and darkness to light.” Watch it here: https://vimeo.com/1191628152
