🙏 Recapping a powerful weekend on the Mountain!

In early August, we were honored to host the 80th Annual Conference of the Episcopal Laymen of Tennessee here at St. Mary's Sewanee! Nearly 110 guests gathered August 7–9 for a weekend of fellowship, reflection, and renewal under this year's theme: "Faith in Action: Building Resilient Men, Restoring Communities, Renewing the Earth."

Eight decades of tradition met the next generation of leadership on our mountaintop setting — what a joy to be part of it. Thank you to the Episcopal Laymen of Tennessee for choosing St. Mary's as your home for this milestone conference!

🌟 St. Mary's Sewanee Fun Fact! 🌟

Our campus has been buzzing with new faces lately! Over the past few months, we've welcomed a wonderful wave of first-time guests — drawn here through a variety of our retreats and events, including the Centering Prayer, the Women's Writing Retreat, the SoulCollage® Workshop, and our Labyrinth Day event, among others. More and more people are finding their way to St. Mary's Sewanee through our sponsored retreats.

Each of these gatherings has its own rhythm and spirit, but they all share the same heart — creating space for rest, reflection, and connection on our beautiful South Cumberland Plateau campus. It's such a joy to watch people discover us for the first time, whether they come for a guided program, a personal retreat, or simply to walk the grounds and breathe a little easier.

If you haven't visited us yet, we'd love to have you! Take a look at our upcoming sponsored programs and see what our new friends are talking about. 💛

✨ A Beautiful Introduction to SoulCollage® Workshop Here on the Mountain ✨

This July, St. Mary's Sewanee hosted a sold-out SoulCollage® Workshop, and it was a soul-stirring day of creativity and reflection.

Developed by psychotherapist and author Seena Frost, SoulCollage® invites participants to select and assemble images into personal collage cards — each one a reflection of an inner archetype, memory, relationship, or emotion.

Our group explored the method's origins and theory, learned the "suits" that structure a SoulCollage® deck, practiced selecting and assembling images, discussed the ethics of card-making, and began reading their own cards for the wisdom they hold. This workshop also fulfilled the official prerequisite for SoulCollage® Facilitator Training.

A heartfelt thank you to our SoulCollage® Facilitators, Beth Richardson and Amy Lyles Wilson, for leading this meaningful experience! And thank you to everyone who joined us.

✨ Employee Spotlight: Meet Lou! ✨

This month, we're shining a light on Lou, a member of our talented kitchen team here at St. Mary's Sewanee!

Lou brings many years of culinary experience to our team. A native of the mountain, she spent many years as the cook and manager at Coalmont Elementary School before joining us here, where she now enjoys creating delicious meals and working alongside the St. Mary's Sewanee team.

Lou's roots in Sewanee actually go back to her childhood. She grew up tagging along with her grandmother, who volunteered at the Sisters' Convent thrift store just next door to us (fun fact: the Convent is its own special place, distinct from St. Mary's Sewanee!). She spent afternoons playing among the clothing racks, and she took home a treasured item or two. Each Christmas, she took part in the children's toy program and still carries fond memories of the Sisters' kindness and generosity toward her family.

Outside of work, Lou enjoys studying the Bible and spending time with her family — her husband of many years, Fred, and their two children, Caitlin and Drew.

We're so grateful Lou has come full circle back to Sewanee, bringing her history, her heart, and her wonderful cooking to our community. Thank you, Lou! 💛

🍽️ Come & See Community Event Recap 🍽️

What an incredible turnout on Saturday, August 1st — around 180 people joined us on New Hope Bluff for a day of rest, renewal, and connection!

A huge thank-you to Triple 7 BBQ for keeping everyone well-fed with delicious food throughout the day. 🔥

We're also grateful for the wonderful vendors and practitioners who joined us — including practitioners Tom Camp, Robbie Pinter, Tom Ward, and Amy Lyles Wilson, alongside our talented vendors who each brought their own gifts and expertise to the day. A special thank-you to the Spinning Group for sharing beautiful weaving demonstrations with our guests! Your presence made the day rich with variety and discovery.

Thank you to everyone who came out to explore, connect, and spend the day with us. Days like this remind us why community matters. 💛

We're delighted to welcome Margo Cloniger to the St. Mary's Sewanee team as our new Weekend Hospitality Host! 🌿

Margo grew up in Nashville but has spent every summer of her life in Monteagle, and for the past two years has split her time between Sewanee and Nashville. She and her husband, David, have three college-aged, adventurous children she describes as "amazing."

Margo brings a rich, creative spirit to our team. She weaves burial shrouds by hand and works as an end-of-life doula, bringing a heart-centered presence to that sacred work. She also loves making things with her hands — spinning, knitting, watercolor, and collage — and enjoys writing and reading poetry and personal essays.

What she loves most about working at St. Mary's Sewanee? Being in a place where she feels valued, where time is taken to attend to one another's humanity and changing needs, and where the whole person is welcomed and celebrated — sunsets included!

Margo tries to remind herself each morning to "pay attention" and "be astonished," borrowing Mary Oliver's instructions for living a life.

Please join us in giving Margo a warm welcome the next time you're on the mountain! 💛
