Today marks the first day back to school in Sevier County, and we want to celebrate the true heart of our schools, our incredible teachers.

A special shout out goes to Vernon Chandler, Career and Technical Education teacher at Sevier County High School. His passion, patience, and dedication shape not only minds but also futures. His class sparks curiosity, encourages dreams, and builds the foundation for lifelong learning.

Anyone who knows Mr. Chandler knows the steady strength and unwavering commitment he brings to his students. No matter the challenges the day puts in his path, he continues to show up with determination, kindness, and a genuine belief in his students’ potential. We’ve watched him guide with patience, encourage with sincerity, and inspire by example. His impact reaches far beyond the walls of the school.

Mr. Chandler, you are appreciated beyond measure. 💙 Thank you for leading our doghouse project, giving students hands-on building experience while creating safe shelters for pets and also supporting our nation’s veterans.

Thanks to Dallas Short with Operation Therapy, the doghouses are already being put to good use, providing safe, comfortable shelter for the beloved pets of our nation’s veterans. Thank you for the extra set of muscles, DJ!

Thank you again to Jordan Perez with
Rescue Roofing & Exteriors for donating supplies for these beautiful doghouses.

10 days. During the summer, that is the average length of time you have before a female cat will go into heat again once her kittens are gone.
10 weeks. During the summer, that is the average time after birth she will go into heat again even if she is still nursing kittens.
10 seconds. That's how long it takes to find a spay and neuter clinic close to you in Tennessee. Click on the link below and then your county.

Call BEFORE you need an appointment. It can take weeks to get an appointment but people cancel and you could get in last minute.

The person answering your call could be a volunteer or the only staff member on duty. Either way, the person answering the phone can only talk to one person at a time. They’re doing their best to help you get scheduled. You need to leave a message so they can call you back.

In Loving Memory of Clyde💙

Clyde crossed the rainbow bridge this week, but his pawprints will be with us forever. Clyde was originally pulled into a foster home from a tiny shelter in Illinois. There, he learned what toys were, what snacks were his favorite, and what he could talk mom into with his big eyes. That foster home became his forever home.

💛 In honor of Clyde’s life, a spay surgery is being sponsored. If you know of a dog who could benefit, please post a picture of her in the comments below. (Or comment her name and age) The owner will let us know which dog they have selected.

Clyde was more than a pet—he was family, and his legacy will continue through the life of another dog given the chance to thrive.

Rest easy, sweet boy. You were so very loved.

Our clinic was not founded to generate revenue but to fill a need in the community. Before Kindness Counts was built, our founder, April, spent years voluntarily transporting pets from Sevier County to other counties with low-cost spay and neuter clinics. Although her efforts were life-changing for the people and animals she helped, she wanted to do more.

Kindness Counts Spay and Neuter Clinic was created to be the larger impact April envisioned.

Today, the need for spay and neuter services has remained consistent, but more pet owners are now willing to have their pets spayed or neutered. Our staff is currently in the process of growing to keep up with this need. Please be patient during this time. We receive over 200 calls and texts each day, and while we do our best to respond promptly, it’s not possible for our small team to answer every call as it comes in. We kindly ask that you leave a voicemail or send a text message, and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

*Picture for attention only. This timid baby was fixed with us a few weeks ago. If Broadway ever needed a dog to cast for The Grinch, this would be the dog. 💙

Research shows that unaltered pets are THE leading cause of our pet overpopulation crisis.

Studies, veterinarians, and animal welfare organizations consistently highlight that postponing sterilization often leads to unintended litters, placing a strain on shelters and leading to unnecessary suffering for animals.

Veterinarians recommend pets be fixed by five months to avoid unwanted litters. The article linked below talks about the benefits and myths associated with fixing your pets while they are younger.

Spaying and neutering cats before five months of age has become the accepted norm, thanks in part to the “Fix Felines by Five” Initiative.

East Tennessee is home to breathtaking natural beauty and an abundance of wildlife—but with that beauty comes unpredictability. To keep your beloved pets safe, it's essential to protect them with a rabies vaccination. Not only does it guard against a deadly disease, it's also required by state law. Vaccinating your pet is a simple act of love that keeps your furry family members, and our community, safe.

Reminder: the Sevier County Health Department is holding a Rabies Vaccination Clinic at various locations throughout the County during the month of May.

Clinic Dates and Locations:

Tuesday, May 6th | 5:30 - 6:15 PM
- New Center Elementary School
- Seymour Primary School
- Northview Primary School

Thursday, May 8th | 5:30 - 6:15 PM
- Wearwood Elementary School

Saturday, May 10th | 9:00 - 9:45 AM
- Sevier County Health Department

The cost of the rabies vaccine is $15.00, cash only.

All pets must be on a leash or in a carrier at the time of vaccination.

For more information, please contact the Sevier County Environmental Health Program at (865) 453-2787.
