🐝 June Meeting Announcement 🐝
First Monday of the month every month!
June
The Sevier County Beekeepers Association is excited to welcome special guest speaker Chuck Davis for our June meeting!
6/1/26 come see us!!!

Chuck Davis is well known throughout the Tennessee beekeeping community for his leadership, knowledge, and passion for honeybee education. He currently serves as President of the Blount County Beekeepers Association and has spent years helping educate and mentor beekeepers across the state.

This month, Chuck will be speaking about Winter Management for Honeybee Colonies — one of the most important topics for beekeepers in East Tennessee. From preparing colonies for colder months and managing resources, to helping bees survive winter stress and come out strong in spring, this will be an educational session packed with practical knowledge for beekeepers of all experience levels.

If you want healthier hives, stronger overwintering success, and valuable insight from an experienced beekeeper, you will not want to miss this meeting!

Come out, bring a friend, and join us for a great evening of education, fellowship, and all things honeybees. 🍯🐝

What a fantastic day at Farm Day in Sevier County Beekeepers Association! 🐝🌻

We had an absolute blast spending the day teaching kids all about the incredible world of honeybees. From explaining how a hive works to showing off the bees up close, the excitement and curiosity from the kids made the entire event unforgettable. Seeing young minds light up when they learned how important pollinators are to our farms, flowers, and food supply was truly something special.

The club had an amazing time connecting with the community, answering questions, sharing stories, and helping people better understand just how fascinating and important honeybees really are. Events like this remind us why education and outreach matter so much in the beekeeping world.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by, asked questions, and spent time with us throughout the day. We’re proud to represent the beekeeping community and even more proud to inspire the next generation of bee lovers and pollinator protectors.

All in all, it was a beautiful day in Sevier County full of smiles, learning, laughter, and of course… bees everywhere! 🐝🍯

🐝🌟 Sevier County Beekeepers Association – Buzzy Bee Yard Adventures! 🌟🐝

What a fun and action-packed day in the bee yard! The buzz was real, and so was the learning 💪🐝

We started things off with a little queen situation 👑—introducing a caged queen to replace one we lost. Pro tip of the day: keep her safe in your pocket… but whatever you do, don’t take off running! 😅

First mission: check if the hives were queen-right. One colony looked strong and thriving, but their queen was starting to look a little worn—and the workers definitely seemed to be noticing. The hive always knows!

Huge shoutout to Mandy for earning today’s ⭐ Gold Star Award ⭐—she came prepared with a marker and made sure we documented everything we saw. That’s how you level up in beekeeping!

Members also got hands-on experience spotting eggs 👀🥚—one of the most important skills for understanding what’s really going on inside the hive.

Days like this are what it’s all about—learning, laughing, and building better beekeepers together. The future is buzzing bright! 🐝🔥

🌟 May Meeting Spotlight – Sevier County Beekeepers Association 🌟

First Monday of the month!

We’re excited to welcome Howard Kerr as our guest speaker this May! 🐝

Howard will be presenting on bee vision—a fascinating topic that gives insight into how honeybees see and interact with the world around them. This is one you won’t want to miss!

Howard brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table:
✔️ Long-time beekeeper from Blount County
✔️ Former President of the Blount County Beekeepers Association
✔️ Former President of the Tennessee Beekeepers Association (TBA)

His leadership and years of hands-on experience in beekeeping make him an incredible resource for beekeepers of all levels.

Whether you’re brand new to bees or have years under your belt, you’ll walk away with valuable knowledge you can apply in your own apiary.

📅 Be sure to join us for a great evening of learning, fellowship, and all things bees!

Back in the bee yard today and things are heating up! 🔥

We spotted swarm cells, which made for the perfect opportunity to try this week’s focus: the Demaree split—not a true split, but a great way to control swarming and push for more honey production.

✔️ Queen moved to a medium super
✔️ Double screen board added
✔️ Vertical split created on the swarm-cell hive

We also did a walkaway split in the horizontal hive and let the bees take over from there. 👑🐝

Lots of hands-on learning today—and some folks already looked like pros out there!

🌼🐝 Guest Speaker Announcement! 🐝🌼

We’re excited to welcome Jaimie Matzko as our upcoming guest speaker!

Did you know there are over 300 species of bees in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park? That’s right—our mountains are home to an incredible diversity of native pollinators that play a vital role in our ecosystem.

Over the next 3 years, Discover Life in America (DLiA) will be launching their Pollinator Project in the Smokies, starting with efforts to assess the health and status of native bee populations.

🎤 Join us to learn:
🐝 What native pollinators and honeybees have in common
🌸 How native bees can complement your honeybee colonies
🌿 Which native plants you can add to support pollinators in your own yard

Whether you’re a beekeeper, gardener, or just love the outdoors, this is a talk you won’t want to miss!

👉 Come out, learn something new, and support pollinators in East Tennessee!

🐝 Sevier County Beekeepers Association – Bee Yard Update (March 21, 2026) 🐝

Another great day in the bee yard for our second visit of the season!

We added queen excluders, put on a super, and set up feeders as the colonies continue to build with the early spring flow here in East Tennessee. 🌼🍯

One of the highlights was getting to see a queen cell up close—always a great learning moment and a reminder of just how dynamic a hive can be this time of year.

Then it was time to turn things over to the students—hands-on learning at its best! 💪🐝

We had plans to perform a walk-away split and move it into what we believed was a queenless hive… but as beekeeping often reminds us, things don’t always go as planned! That “dead” hive turned out to be very much alive—and queen-right after all.

Robert stepped in and was able to locate and mark the laying queen (great work!), though where she came from is still a bit of a mystery. Just another example of how bees keep us guessing!

The colony we originally planned to split gave us a full look at everything we hope to see: capped brood, larvae (milk brood), emerging brood, pollen stores, and honey. In the end, it likely wasn’t quite ready to be split yet—so it all worked out for the best.

Plenty of hands-on experience, great discussions, and lots of questions—and, of course, plenty of answers.

Well… except from the bees…They already knew exactly what they were doing. 😉

🐝🌞 Great Day with the Sevier County Beekeepers Association! 🌞🐝

We had an incredible first beekeepers meet out at the apiary with the Sevier County Beekeepers Association! It was a beautiful day in the beeyard full of learning, hands-on experience, and great fellowship among beekeepers.

Participants had the opportunity to light smokers, set up new hive boxes, and get a close-up look inside a working hive. Everyone was able to see frames with honey, uncapped and capped brood, eggs, and even the queen herself — always a highlight!

A special thanks to Robert, who also gave a real-life demonstration on how to calmly deal with a sting to the finger. As beekeepers know, it’s all part of the experience! 😄

It was a fantastic day of learning, sharing knowledge, and building excitement for the season ahead. The future is bright for beekeeping here in Sevier County, and we’re looking forward to many more great days in the bee yard! 🐝🍯

How To Maximize Your Honey Production
Don’t we all want to make a good honey crop each year? Of course, the answer is
yes and this presentation will address the issue of how to making the most of the
nectar/honey flow. We will look at the important conditions which must be met
to achieve maximum production of every colony in your apiary. We will discuss
the importance of queens, colony size, swarming, supering, weather and more.
Hope to see everyone there and ready to learn.
