Initial results of the Three Village Civic Assoociation - Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Survey.

This graph compares how safe respondents feel when walking or biking in their own neighborhood (green values) vs walking or biking between neighborhoods (such as shopping areas, schools, train station, etc).

1. The gap is town-wide. Across all 283 respondents, people rate safety within their own neighborhood 3.18 out of 5, but only 2.08 travelling between neighborhoods — a drop of 1.10 points. None of the three main areas scores above 2.16 on getting between places.

2. South Setauket feels safest at home and least safe leaving it. Its residents give their own streets 3.74 out of 5 — the highest score of any area — yet rate travel between neighborhoods just 1.88, the lowest of the three main areas. That 1.85-point gap is nearly double Setauket/East Setauket's 0.97 or Stony Brook's 1.02.

3. Setauket/East Setauket, the largest group at 130 responses, rates its own streets lowest of the three main areas at 3.03 out of 5. For those residents the problem starts at their front door, not just at the hamlet line.

4. Stony Brook (91 responses) tracks the town average on both measures — 3.19 within, 2.16 between. It posts the best between-neighborhood score of the three main areas, and it is still barely above 2 out of 5.

5. The fix is connection, not local streets. Residents already rate their own neighborhoods close to the midpoint; what collapses the score is the trip to shops, schools, parks and the train — which is exactly what 80% of respondents said they want explored through a continuous bike/pedestrian route.

Assemblywoman Kassay is proud to announce June’s Monthly Mission and invites community members to take part in Tagging Horseshoe Crabs this Saturday, June 13th from 9:30 pm - 11:30 pm at West Meadow Beach.

This event will take place under the new moon in the late evening at 100 Trustees Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790.

This counting & tagging event is part of a statewide citizen-science effort to help assess the status of horseshoe crabs in New York State and guide the state’s regulations for protecting nature’s oldest survivors. This event is made possible by the Town of Brookhaven, Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Marine Program, New York Horseshoe Crab Monitoring Network, Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

No experience is necessary, and children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Volunteers of all ages are invited to take part in this hands-on event. Data Center Update:

I have been writing and talking about my concerns regarding data centers for the past few months because I believe Brookhaven needs to get ahead of this issue before applications start landing on our desks.

Across the country, communities are asking the same questions: how much electricity will these facilities require, how much water will they use for cooling, who pays for grid upgrades, and do local governments have the right rules in place to regulate them properly?

These questions are particularly pertinent to us here in Brookhaven because of the inherently fragile nature of living on an island. On Long Island, our drinking water comes from the aquifer beneath our feet. We do not have a reservoir system to fall back on. If a data center uses our drinking water for cooling, it can have real impacts on our future. Similarly, our electrical generation and distribution system is a finite resource. If a large private user requires major electric upgrades, ordinary ratepayers should not be stuck paying those costs.

That is why I advocated for an 18-month moratorium in Brookhaven, and I am grateful that the Supervisor and Town Board have agreed to take that step. The goal is not to just delay for delay’s sake. It is to give us time to study the issue carefully so that when we press “unpause,” we have a solid framework to protect residents, electric ratepayers, and the aquifer.

This is not about banning technology. Data centers support online shopping, banking, medical records, streaming, cybersecurity, business software, and much more. But modern infrastructure needs modern rules. If these facilities are proposed here, we should know how much power and water they need, how they plan to cool, whether they can use reclaimed or non-potable water, and who pays for infrastructure upgrades.

This issue is also bigger than Brookhaven. The aquifer and electric grid are regional resources shared by residents across the island. Pushing a poorly regulated data center from one town to another does not solve the problem, so we need a regional solution. That's why I am grateful to Assemblywoman Rebecca Kassay for helping carry these concerns to Albany and supporting the State’s similar moratorium bill, now awaiting the Governor’s action. I also want to thank Supervisor Dan Panico, who has been active and engaged on this issue from the beginning.

This is the planning approach the Brookhaven Town Board should take whenever a major new use comes before us: study the impacts, bring the right people into the conversation, and set rules that protect the community over the long term.

The Three Village Civic Association was well-represented at the St. James 5 Mile Challenge and 5K Fun Run/Walk today, with a team that included a few of our board members.

It was a fantastic morning for our community to come together and support the mission to build a Ronald McDonald House at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

It is always a great day in the community when we can come together for a meaningful cause!
