Construction and Wilderness Permit Update!

Park crews are repairing an eroded section of Graves Creek Road! This means East Fork Quinault River Trail and Enchanted Valley permits will be released on Recreation.gov starting at 9 a.m. PST on June 3. Permits remain available by phone and email while crews work. For more information, contact the Wilderness Information Center at [email protected] or 360‑565‑3100.

As always, it’s important to keep the following in mind when planning a trek into the wilderness:

- Wilderness permits are required for all overnight trips in Olympic National Park’s backcountry. Day hikers do not need wilderness permits.

- Hard‑sided, animal‑resistant food containers—also known as bear cans—are required in all wilderness areas. Learn more about the best available tool to prevent wildlife from acquiring food here:
https://www.nps.gov/.../plany.../wilderness-food-storage.htm

- Snow lingers on alpine trails well into the summer season. Make sure you’re selecting a route that matches your skills and equipment.

- Share your itinerary with friends or family so they can contact park rangers if anything happens to your group.

- Unexpected events, like extreme weather or wildfire, can derail trips. Stay flexible and be prepared to change plans.

- Olympic National Park’s plants and wildlife depend on you! Help protect them by packing out your trash and following Leave No Trace principles.

What a gorgeous weekend here on the Peninsula! A fantastic crew of Backcountry Horsemen of Washington - Peninsula Chapter members participated in the Sequim Irrigation Festival Parade on Saturday. Were you there? Did you spot them? Horses and humans were looking grand in their matching blue accents. The group consisted of several riders, banner carriers and drivers for the truck and tool trailer and of course a little lawn tractor caboose in toe as the pooper scooper.

Big thanks to Sequim Irrigation Festival for having us as part of their parade and festivities. We love spreading joy and information about the work we do in the community and on the trails!

Last weekend several Backcountry Horsemen of Washington - Peninsula Chapter members headed over the cascades to Ellensburg, WA for the annual Back Country Horsemen of Washington Rendezvous statewide gathering. A great time was had with informational sessions, like back country first aid, packing and gear instruction and contest, tack sale, and we can’t forget the incredible dinner and dessert dash! Each chapter even participates in a table decorating contest for the dinner Saturday night. Check out the winning Lego themed table! And our very own chapter member, Heather got 3rd place in the trailer backing rodeo!

A great New Years Day ride out at Miller State Park! Not as cold this year and a good turnout. Judy had to climb on a trailer to get everyone's attention for her pre-ride announcement. Nice potluck at the end too. What a great equine community we have here.
