Master Gardeners of Clallam County

Master Gardeners are a group of local volunteers and avid gardeners who undergo a 7-8 week intensive training program before they are allowed to help other area gardeners. Master Gardener training not only teaches about gardening in Clallam County, but more importantly about where to find current, safe, research-based solutions to local gardening problems.

t’s an hour past sunset, and I’m alone atop a mountain in Southern California, surrounded by darkness. I’m fixated on a 5-gallon bucket, a halo of eerie blue light emanating from the top. A swarm of moths frantically pursues the light, completely entrancing me. This isn’t some odd form of me...

Be Bold, Go Gold This Summer

A thick green lawn feels luxurious to walk across barefoot in the summer, but it may be time to rethink the emerald-green jewel in your front yard. Due to a low snowpack in the Olympic Mountains, many areas in Clallam County are under Stage 2 drought restrictions that request residents voluntarily limit water usage.

With everything else that needs watering in your garden like trees, shrubs and veggies, why not forgo watering your lawn this year? Be bold and go gold!

According to Washington State University, letting your lawn turn gold will make the grass go dormant, but not dead. When the fall rains return, so will the green. Other reasons to skip grass watering include saving money on your water bill and lawn fertilizers and reduces the frequency of mowing which saves both money and time.

If you’re still keen on green and do decide to water your grass this summer, water deeply and infrequently, and don’t mow your grass too low which can lead to shallow roots.

It's Plant Clinic season! We have an in-person plant clinic at Swain's this Friday from 10:00 to 1:00. Plant samples and/or pictures are helpful.

But you don't have to have a plant clinic question to stop by and say hello. We're quite friendly that way, and can tell you more about who we are as Master Gardeners and what we do.
