Volunteer Spotlight: Carolyn DeSalvo, MD 💙

Dr. Carolyn DeSalvo has been volunteering as a provider with the clinic since August 2018, bringing both experience and compassion to the patients she serves. Having previously worked at a similar clinic in Kansas, she was eager to continue giving back after moving to Sequim. She first connected with the clinic after meeting former Medical Director Dr. Kip Tulin at the Fun Walk, where the conversation naturally turned toward volunteering.

What Dr. DeSalvo enjoys most is the people—patients, staff, and fellow volunteers alike. Over the years, she has built relationships with several “regular” patients who often come in when she is working, creating meaningful continuity of care. She shares that volunteering has been a humbling experience, especially meeting hardworking individuals who are struggling despite their resilience and positive attitudes.

It’s the people and the tremendous need in the community that keep her coming back. Looking ahead, Dr. DeSalvo hopes to see the clinic continue to grow so it can serve even more members of our community in the years to come.

Volunteer Spotlight: Dylan Carroll 💙

Dylan Carroll may be one of our newer volunteers, but he has already become a valued part of the clinic team. Over the past few months, he has helped in Assessment, reception, and with a variety of special projects throughout the clinic. Dylan first got involved after being referred by a coworker while looking for volunteer opportunities to support his school applications.

What Dylan enjoys most is the atmosphere of the clinic—the welcoming environment, the chance to help others, and the variety of new situations and experiences each shift brings. One thing that surprised him most was just how kind and patient everyone is, from fellow volunteers to the patients themselves.

Volunteering has helped Dylan realize that even small acts of kindness can make a real difference in someone’s life. While volunteer hours may have brought him through the door initially, it’s the positive energy, meaningful work, and friendly faces that keep him coming back.

Volunteer Spotlight: Janel Liane Wiley 💙
Janel has been volunteering as a nurse with the clinic for the past five to six years, bringing compassion, humor, and heart to every shift. After the pandemic, she wasn’t quite ready to return to work, but when her mother saw an ad seeking clinic volunteers, Janel reached out and came in to meet with Rose—and the rest is history.
Janel says she truly loves the clinic, the opportunity to serve her community, and seeing how appreciated the clinic’s services are by the people who come through the doors. One thing that surprised her most was how much she misses her shift if she skips a month, a testament to how meaningful volunteering has become in her life. She describes volunteering as one of the positives in her post-pandemic world.
When asked what keeps her coming back, Janel’s answer was immediate: “The treats and the pens! The people! Rose!” Over the years, she has seen more and more people relying on the clinic’s services, reinforcing just how important it is to the community. Her hope for the next 25 years is simple but powerful—that the clinic is still here, continuing to care for those who need it. She also shared heartfelt gratitude for everyone who helps keep the clinic open and thriving.

Volunteer Spotlight: Randi Cooper 💙

Randi Cooper has been a dedicated receptionist with the clinic for an incredible 25 years, offering a warm welcome and steady presence to generations of patients. She first got involved through Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, and her commitment has never wavered.

For Randi, it’s all about the people. She cherishes the connections made over the years—patients, volunteers, and the many moments that have shaped the clinic’s story, from fun walks to the joy of Kip Tulin playing the accordion. She’s continually amazed and grateful that the clinic is still here, continuing to serve those in need.

Volunteering has deepened her understanding of just how great the need for accessible health care is in our community. That need—and the people—are what keep her coming back year after year. Having seen the clinic grow from its early days in the pastoral house to the expanded services we offer today, including increased access to dental care, Randi looks ahead with one simple hope: that we continue helping our community for many years to come.

The clinic's mission is to provide access to free, quality health care to those who are medically underserved and to provide education to promote wellness. 🫶The Sequim Free Clinic serves populations that are often invisible: working people who don't receive insurance through their jobs or who can't afford their deductibles, as well as new residents waiting to establish care, and workers who are between jobs and need to bridge gaps in coverage.

Volunteer Spotlight: Donna Cameron 💙

Donna Cameron has been a cornerstone of the clinic for an incredible 21 years. She began her journey in Assessment and now serves as a Nurse Manager, bringing both experience and heart to every shift. Donna first got involved through Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, where, as she jokes, if you were in the medical field—you were quickly recruited!

What Donna treasures most is the patients, whom she describes as truly lovely. Over the years, she has experienced countless meaningful moments, but what stands out most is the joy, gratitude, and relief she sees on patients’ faces. While she once wondered how changes in healthcare might impact the clinic’s future, she’s proud to see it still thriving and serving those in need.

Volunteering has become a part of who Donna is, and she’s especially proud of the example it has set for her children about the importance of giving back. It’s the fun, camaraderie, and deep sense of purpose that keep her coming back year after year. Having seen the clinic grow from a tiny house into its current space with expanded services and providers, Donna looks ahead with hope that we will continue caring for our community for many years to come.

Volunteer Spotlight: Lesli Mays 💙

Lesli Mays has been volunteering with the clinic for about a year, serving as a CMA in Assessment and helping care for patients from the moment they arrive. After retiring, Lesli was looking for a meaningful way to stay active—and found exactly that at the clinic.

She shares that what she enjoys most is the people, both her fellow volunteers and the patients she serves. One thing that has especially stood out to her is just how grateful the patients are, which makes the experience even more rewarding. Volunteering brings Lesli a deep sense of fulfillment, and she says it simply makes her feel good to give back.

What keeps her coming back is everything—the camaraderie with coworkers, the supportive staff, and the patients themselves. Lesli hopes the clinic continues to be an essential part of the community for many years to come, and she’s incredibly grateful that this special place exists—for both volunteers and the patients who rely on it.
