John 3:16 - It’s been called the golden text of the Bible. It’s likely the most memorized and recognized verse in all of Scripture, and it’s probably the first verse you learned in Sunday School.
But have you ever considered the setting in which it was shared in the Bible?
I don’t dare try to imply that I know better than God regarding where this verse was placed and shared in His Word, but from a human, finite mind, have you ever wondered why He didn’t allow Matthew to include it in the Sermon On The Mount? I mean, there were multitudes that were gathered there that would have heard about how God loved them so much that He sent His one and only Son to die, so that whoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life.
But this was not the setting that God chose to deliver this verse.
Well, let’s share it with John the Baptist, and he will thunder it forth from the wilderness or the banks of the Jordan River.
If not him, then certainly the Apostle Paul. Let’s share John 3:16 with him, and he will take this glorious message all over the world! (I know, he did anyway😄)
But, no. God didn’t chose any of these settings or these people in which to give us John 3:16. He didn’t even give it to the disciples when they were gathered together so many times to hear His teaching. And do you know why? Because I believe God is teaching us a monumental principle in how, and to whom, Jesus shared this verse.
Here it is - the gospel is PERSONAL!! It was shared in a one-on-one setting. Not to multitudes, not to a group, and not in a synagogue. The gospel is for everyone, but I’m so thankful it came to me personally as a 6-year old boy.
Secondly, we need to notice who it was shared with. John 3:16 was shared with someone who was seeking. Someone who had trouble understanding the things he had heard Jesus say. Nicodemus had a head knowledge but not a heart knowledge. He was well-versed in the Scriptures, but he did not understand what it meant to be born again. John 3:16 is for anyone who is curious, who has questions, who doesn’t understand “Bible language.” It’s for the self-righteous person who is being drawn to Jesus. It’s for people like Nicodemus who realized there is more to life than position, power, and prestige.
John 3:16 is for me! John 3:16 is for you! It’s for our families, our friends, and our co-workers. John 3:16 is for the world.
If you knew my Dad, he would describe it like this, “John 3:16. I don’t understand it, but it sure makes a cold boy warm. It sure makes a dirty boy clean. It makes a hungry boy full, and it makes a lost boy saved!!”🙌🏻
