Veterans can secure up to $6,800 for service-connected conditions or up to $2,000 for non-service-connected conditions through the VA’s HISA Grant. For severe, qualifying service-connected disabilities requiring major structural changes, the SAH Grant provides up to $121,812. Both require your project to be deemed medically necessary. [1, 2, 3, 4]
The easiest way to begin is by applying for the Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) Grant. Here is the step-by-step process: [1, 2]

1. Key Eligibility Requirements

VA Health Care: You must be enrolled in the VA health care system.

Prescription: You need a prescription or clinical justification from a VA physician confirming the remodel is medically necessary for accessibility or mobility. [1, 2, 3]

2. What the Grant Covers

Roll-in or zero-threshold showers

Lowering bathroom counters and sinks

Widening doorways for wheelchair access

Improving plumbing or electrical if necessitated by medical equipment [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

3. How to Apply

Gather Documents: Obtain your prescription, take photos of the current bathroom, get an itemized estimate from a contractor, and complete VA Form 10-0103.

Submit: Turn your application packet into your local VA Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service.

Wait for Approval: The VA will review the scope of work and issue a decision before work can begin. [1, 2, 3]

For more detailed information, review the official VA HISA Guidelines or check out the broader Disability Housing Grants offered by the U.S. government.
