The Arc of Oconee County

The Arc of Oconee County Arc of Oconee County is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the life for all intellectu Their vision was to build a school for disabled children.

A small group of parents banded together in 1962 to champion the rights of their children with disabilities. This was prior to the Americans with Disabilities Act; children with disabilities were not provided educational opportunities within the school system. The Oconee Association for Retarded Children (ARC) was organized in September, 1964. The community embraced the ARC and through hard work a

nd a team spirit the dream of a school was realized. Classes began with five students and Seneca Sertoma Club provided a bus for transportation. The school quickly grew in enrollment and in February 1971, Mrs. Bert Tribble donated twelve acres of land and $25,000 to the Oconee ARC. In February 1974, the ARC officially opened its new school, appropriately named Tribble Memorial Center. The ARC has evolved into the Arc of Oconee County and it continues to advocate for and enhance the lives of all special needs citizens.
