Thank goodness for Bekah the nightowl

We received a call at 11:30 last night from a Pasco County Sheriff who found a barred owl, which he thought was a garbage bag.

He was way up in Odessa an hour away from me. I called Barb Walker with Tampa Bay Raptor Rescue and she was trying to figure out a way to get to the owl also.

We remembered our late night weekend rescuer Bekah. I asked if she was up for an owl rescue and her response, "Is my name Bekah?"

She was able to pick up the owl and
and get it to Barb Walker around 12:30 That's dedication!
We have an incredible support system.

A memory from Hurricane Milton

A family was on Indian Rocks Beach two days after the hurricane when the son went over to pet the bird.

He cried out because the bird was a cormorant and bit him. When his dad went to check he discovered a cormorant buried up to his neck. The storm surge had pushed the bird against the seawall.

Just a few feet away he spotted another one buried as well. These poor birds had been buried unable to move except their heads.

The dad dug them out and brought them to me. We administered fluids right away. One could not stand for several hours due to atrophy.

They were transporter all the way to Venice to the Wildlife Center of Southwest Florida. They were the closest facility open.

They made a full recovery miraculously.

Baby is much happier now and Joe gets a two for one

We received a report about baby duck with a plastic ring around her mouth.
When we approached her the mother would lead her babies away from the bank. We needed to get the ring off quick so baby could eat and drink again.

We asked Joe to try with his castnet skills, but still no luck. He went that night, found the family hunkered down. He ended up chasing baby a block away when he finally caught her.

Now baby can eat and drink again.
While he was there he also tried for this anghinga with fabric on the beak.

He ended up getting him the following day.
A big thanks to Joe.

Seminole Fire Department rescued this last baby duck

The wonderful callers manged to lift the heavy grate off the drain and with a pool net to get nine of the babies out the caller had her husband bring to the assisted living residence.

This husband was just so kind and his friend who was helping. We tried for an hour to get this last baby out.

Finally we called the Fire Department and how they maneuvered this huge truck with only a few feet on either side was incredible skill.

Babies were reunited with mom away from the area.
We are grateful for the help our callers and fire departments give us.

Its that time of the year where we get get numerous calls about young night herons.

They usually fall out of the nest or are pushed out by their siblings. If left on the ground they will not survive. Usually predators will get them or they may starve to death.

We called Jim and Mel for help. We needed help and quickly. They weren't far and now baby is safe for tonight.

You will see the what we call Einstein hair, that indicates it is too young to be out. If the hair is flattened and the heron is confidently walking around then they are ready.

Thank you Jim and Mel!

A big thanks to our caller for reporting two baby cooper's hawks

Cole Russell was walking around the block during his lunch. He came across the two babies in the nest.

The babies were lucky to have landed on top of the nest. Problem was the babies were right by a sidewalk which
is so dangerous due to anybody walking their dog or curious kids.

Cole waited for forty minutes until we could get to the babies. Then Nancy at the Raptor Center of Tampa Bay was able to find transport for them.

Thanks Cole for your help keeping babies safe, and Raptor Center for taking them and finding transport .

Good thing this peahen was white or Bekah may not have found her

We asked Bekah if she was available to rescue this peahen that had a droopy wing. It was late, we weren't really expecting her to go until the next day, but luckily Bekah is a night owl.

Off she went trying to find this peahen in the dark and in a big condo complex. She was able to find her after searching the entire area. She found her across the street hiding in the bushes.

In she came and off to our peafowl expert. Thank you Bekah for not giving up and helping this girl.

With these incredible ladies no rescue is too far

Last night we received a call over 2 hours away. The woman had a very young red shoukdered hawk since the day before and couldn't find help.

I called Nancy Murrah at the Raptor Center of Tampa Bay, she called Barb Walker at the Tampa Bay Raptor Rescue and Sanctuary to see if she could take the hawk if we could get a transporter.

We called Paula Hodges from Criickey Wildlife Rescue and she was willing to meet the people half way and then drive for another hour or more to Tampa Bay Raptor Rescue. We are grateful to our callers for not giving up and being willing to transport although they were leaving the next morning for a trip.

Our network of rehabbers are the most can-do organizations we are lucky to have them helping out the wildlife.
