May of 2025, Sky Hill was contacted by Donald (AKA Duck) about needing to give up his dog. We get many phone calls like this a week. Our general response is, we do not pull any dogs into our program with out them going through the Shelter system first. Too many times, people have given up “their” dog, only later to find out it was not their dog, but they had stolen it from someone else or were angry with some one and was getting back at them by getting rid of their dog. For us- the safest, most legal way to manage intakes is if they go through the Shelter stray hold that terminates known or unknown ownership.
This situation was different. In talking to Duck, this was a person that did not want to give up his buddy Waylon. He was just in a bad spot. Conversation revealed the bad spot he found himself in was due to addiction. He was trying to start the road to recovery, but Waylon could not go with him on that journey. Most recovery programs do not allow pets.
Sky Hill was already meeting with people and trying to merge a new addiction recovery program, which had no name at that time, with what we do at Sky Hill. So, we had contacts to support people trying to overcome addiction. We hooked up Duck with those contacts.
We did not want Duck to give up Waylon, a dog with which he is clearly bonded. We worked out a deal. Duck would get in recovery and help us with projects at Sky Hill, and we would get Waylon fully vetted and foster Waylon until Duck was back on his feet. Turns out, Duck is pretty handy and we may have gotten the better end of this deal.
Since that time, the program we were trying to partner with formed. They now have a name, Certain Day Ministries. Duck was very instrumental in getting Sky Hill ready for Certain Day Ministries to move in and is part of the program and still helping with Sky Hill, and he still has Waylon.
The guys in Certain Day Ministries at Sky Hill Animal Society are starting to help with the dogs, loving the horses and cats that call Sky Hill home. The property Sky Hill sits on is beautiful. The beauty of God’s creation, animals and an amazing view is helping these guys on the road to recovery.
We are pulling five new dogs into the program this week. Watch for pictures and updates. Donate to help if you can! This all takes funding! Once we get to know the new dogs better, we will post pictures and info. Get with us to adopt if you think you see your new best friend! Struggling with addiction? We will point you in the direction to get help there too!
