The mission of the Siskiyou Field Institute is to increase the understanding of, and connection to the Klamath-Siskiyou ecoregion through education, scientific research, and public engagement. Welcome to the Siskiyou Field Institute, SFI, where people come to learn about and explore the amazing Klamath-Siskiyou bioregion, a land of steep mountains, wild rivers and unusual diversity of species and

habitats. SFI is a conduit for scientists and naturalists to share their passion and knowledge with the public each year through Adult Education field courses and SFI Youth Education Programs. Appealing to kids in our community, curious teens, developing professionals or lifelong learners, there’s something for everyone at the Siskiyou Field Institute. Siskiyou Field Institute also facilitates researchers and other academic groups during the field season. Our location allows all students and scholars immediate access to the world-famous serpentinite and old-growth forests of the Klamath-Siskiyous.

Check out this incredible mycelium web found inside an oxidized serpentine rock!

Some of you might know that the serpentine soil found in the Klamath Siskiyou region is known for containing heavy metals like iron and magnesium. Serpentine soil is generally nutrient-poor and contains low amount of essential nutrients for plants, thus encouraging incredible adaption and contributing to the large number of species that exist only in this region,

Mycelium plays a vital, life-sustaining role in this region by acting as the bridge between rock and plant. The flora in this region relies on fungi for a multitude of reasons including helping restrict the uptake of toxic metals into the plants root system. Some fungi even help break down the rock itself.

A huge ‘THANK YOU’ to SOTAR Custom Inflatable Rafts, our new business sponsor. SOTAR created a custom-made, SFI-themed 12ft raft and sold it, donating all the proceeds to SFI youth education programs.

Well, that was quite the Outdoor School (ODS) season! Thank you so much to all the schools who chose to attend SFI for ODS — we know it’s not an easy feat to get the students out here! We had over 350 people pass through SFI for ODS season and some amazing schools: Culver Middle School, Ruch Community Outdoor School, Harbor Lights Middle School, Madrone Trail Charter School and Woodland Charter school (with a special visit from Lincoln Elementary). Thank you to everyone who made ODS happen — the teachers, chaperones, our instructors and coordinators, our brave new Executive Director, kitchen staff, housekeepers and of course our groundskeeper, Lillie!

One last thing: as many of you know, Outdoor School, outdoor education and education in general are all experiencing major funding cutbacks. Schools are struggling to find funds to get their kids outside and now is more important than ever to have our kids connecting with the outdoors and learning how to steward our land and their future.

On our ‘Donate Page’, you have the option to direct your funds towards ‘Youth Education Programs’ (YEPs) where your donation will be used to continue getting kids learning outside. If you are able, please consider donating to SFI’s YEPs to support the next generation of land stewards.
