Midd-West Middle School Students Give Back Through Holiday Food Drive
Students at Midd-West Middle School are learning that the holiday season is about more than gifts—it’s about generosity, empathy, and community.
In December, the school’s S.P.A.R.K. Club (School Pride And Random Kindness), in partnership with Student Council, sponsored a holiday food drive to support students and families within the school and district. The drive kicked off on December 3 and ran for 12 school days, with students bringing in daily food donations during homeroom/WIN.
Collection boxes were placed outside each homeroom, making participation easy and visible throughout the building. Members of S.P.A.R.K. and Student Council, along with guidance counselor Mrs. Rapp, helped collect and count donations during WIN periods each day.
While the drive included an element of friendly competition—daily tallies, small incentives, and a pizza party for the homeroom with the highest overall total—the heart of the initiative remained focused on giving back. Daily announcements helped maintain excitement and momentum throughout the drive.
“The kids really do enjoy a friendly and meaningful competition,” said Mrs. Lantz, advisor for the S.P.A.R.K. Club. “But more importantly, it helps them see that when they work together, their efforts can truly make a difference for others. That’s the lesson we hope sticks with them.”
The effort extended well beyond S.P.A.R.K. and Student Council. Students and teachers from several other clubs offered to help sort donations and assemble food bags, making it a true schoolwide initiative. Teachers and staff across the building also contributed to the drive, modeling the spirit of generosity for students.
School Security Officer Heidi Moyer played an important role by housing collected items in her office and assisting with the setup of tables, helping ensure the process ran smoothly and efficiently. Ami Renninger-Boop, the district’s SAP Liaison and Prevention Specialist, also gave her time to help sort canned goods and organize items so that food bags could be easily assembled by students.
By the end of the drive, students and staff had assembled 75 food bags, each containing items for a holiday meal along with additional staples that can be used throughout the year. These bags will directly support students and families within the school community.
Thanks to the collective efforts of students, staff, and families, the food drive demonstrated the powerful impact that can occur when a school comes together with a shared purpose.
