2027 OHF Tree Planting

Message from Towner State Nursery - North Dakota experienced one of the windiest months on record this past May. Dust storm conditions were common in many areas. These events, combined with warmer temperatures, likely contributed to increased transplant shock in cedars and junipers.

Unlike dormant deciduous trees, conifers begin transpiring immediately after planting. Juniper species have numerous buds and growing points, which require moisture as soon as possible. If at all possible, encourage customers to water cedars and junipers immediately after planting, even if it is only one or two gallons. While watering the entire planting is beneficial, it is especially important for these species. This initial watering helps settle the soil, provides much-needed moisture, and eliminates air pockets around the roots. Taking this extra step can significantly reduce transplant shock in cedars and junipers.

Another helpful practice is to keep trees cool and moist during handling and planting to prevent them from drying out.
