TEXAS β Transportation officials are warning drivers to prepare as thousands of orange traffic cones begin their annual migration south along the Central Cone Flyway.
Each fall, the cones leave their summer range in the northern states in search of warmer pavement, unfinished highway projects and ideal nesting conditions. Researchers say Texas remains their preferred winter destination because of its abundant construction zones and seemingly endless supply of lanes that can be closed without warning.
The first flocks have already been spotted crossing the Red River. Most are expected to follow I-35 through Dallas, Waco, Austin and San Antonio, while others will settle around Houston and along I-10.
Researchers are especially concerned about the permanent colony along I-35. Unlike other traffic cones, these year-round residents no longer migrate and may remain in the same general area for several generations.
Peak migration is expected to continue through December, although officials acknowledge that many of the cones arriving this fall may not migrate back until sometime around 2037.
