Trail Ride!

A lot of questions were presented to me and among riders about points in Performance Classes. So lets talk Performance Classes.
2 important things to remember.
1st _ it's not like Speed Classes where you can wear what you want and can hang on side ways, just as long as you have the shortest time on the timer.
The judge is looking for a calm, attentive horse that is responsive and cooperative to calm cues. A loose rein with calm hand movement, light leg pressure not obvious spurring. Not a martingale to control his head. Judges penalize horses that are distracted, resistant, or show poor manners in the show environment.
In Trail Class, a horse that is going to approach each obstacle calmly, and execute obstacles in a timely manner will score high.
It's not about just completing the obstacle, it's about the communication you have with your horse to maintain good/calm posture in the saddle/reins and your horse willing/calmly responding to your direction.
The same goes in Horsemanship and Western Pleasure.
2nd_ appearance. A lot of questions about dress. Yes there is correct tack and dress. Crisp, clean long sleeve western shirt buttoned to not lay over on your neck, western hat or protective gear, clean boots, clean saddle, correct tack, colors that blend horse and rider. Yes, but what is missed in the total appearance of rider and horse is posture. Does your posture and soft hands add to the appearance of horse and rider being as one out across the arena? Does pulling on your horses face with his head reared distract from your over all appearance as the judges eyes follows your course?
If your new to Performance Classes there is a ton of info on the internet. Just google what a judge looks for in Performance Classes.
