Javelina or Feral Hog? They’re Not the Same Animal!

We have received several questions recently from residents wondering about “wild pigs” they have seen around their property. Our first question --- are you sure they are pigs? While javelinas and feral hogs may look similar at first glance, they are two completely different animals.

Knowing the difference is important because one is a native Texas wildlife species, while the other is a non-native invasive species that can cause significant damage.

Javelina (Collared Peccary)

✅ Native to Texas
✅ Not a true pig — belongs to the peccary family
✅ Smaller, typically around 30–55 pounds
✅ Grayish coat with a lighter-colored “collar” around the neck and shoulders
✅ Small ears and a short, often unnoticeable tail
✅ Commonly feeds on prickly pear, roots, fruits, seeds, and vegetation
✅ An important part of Texas wildlife populations

Feral Hog

⚠️ Non-native invasive species
⚠️ A true pig descended from domestic pigs and Eurasian wild boars
⚠️ Much larger, often 100 pounds or more
⚠️ Can have many different colors and patterns
⚠️ Larger pointed ears and a noticeable tail
⚠️ Causes damage through rooting, crop destruction, habitat disturbance, and competition with native wildlife

🔎 Quick Ways to Tell the Difference

Size:
A javelina is much smaller than most adult feral hogs.

Tail:
Javelina: little to no visible tail
Feral hog: obvious tail

Color:
Javelina: gray coat with a light-colored collar
Feral hog: many colors, including black, brown, spotted, or reddish

Ears:
Javelina: smaller, rounded ears
Feral hog: larger, pointed ears

Before deciding what action to take, make sure you know what animal you are dealing with!

A notable sighting of a great blue heron occurred in our tank, just off Short Cut road, the camera had flipped upside down for a close-up view.
